I have a memory of my one of my cats going "meow" meow" one evening to get my attention and feed her. When I kept reading, ignoring her, she finally went MEOW! and knocked over a cheap plaster sculpture on a table, breaking it. She spent the next five minutes running around the house with me in hot pursuit, with skinning in mind.
I can see the cat being annoyed to discover the nice juicy turkey he was stalking had turned into a smelly human, hence the swipe. It doesn't really sound like a serious attack. Nevertheless, I don't blame the kids for shooting.
Lions do occasionally stalk people out of curiosity. I know one guy in the Central Sierra who was fly fishing at a mountain lake. He'd been at the same spot for some time, turned around and found a lion right behind him, laying down quite relaxed in a non-threatening manner, just watching him cast.
