CA DOJ Extended wait

Hello all,

I've just been called by my local gun shop informing me that the California Dept. of Justice requires an extended waiting period on my handgun purchase (I was set to pick up my new Sig 226 .40 on Sunday). Needless to say, this totally floored me. This is my first handgun purchase, but I have no felonies or domestic violence records.

I do have an active clearance. Would the fact that I underwent a recent federal investigation cause this delay? Any others experience anything like this? This just has me a bit worried because as far as I know, California does not have an appeals process for disqualified applications.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Thanks,
-csk.

The only one I can think of is time to move. I got out of there in '95 and it has only gotten worse by what I hear.

There have been other folks who have mentioned delays after recent security clearance investigations because the recently pending investegation may pop-up as a red flag of sorts (until they figure out what it was really about).

Also, if you have a common name, there is also a good chance that you will be delayed, so that they can make sure you aren't somebody else with a similar name who's a felon or something.

Thanks for the quick replies. Yeah, I love California, but the gun laws don't really make sense.

mp510 - I appreciate the response. I think it probably is the security clearance. I do have a very common name, but I gave my SSN# so that probably isn't the issue.

thanks again,

I've heard the clearance can cause a hiccup with the federal insta-check. Not sure about CalDOJ stuff, though.

Seriously, it's all the more reason to abandon ship. I know, the weather is nice, but the inmates are running the asylum.

Relax, just wait for everything to clear. You have a common name, it just takes a while longer to verify that you aren't a BG. In your case, giving your SSN probably will help to speed it up.

Guys - thanks for all the responses. I'm probably overthinking this and it's not a big deal. I'll just sit tight and wait for things to work themselves out. Has anyone else experienced an extended wait in California? How long did you have to wait?

Thanks again.

Those doing the background checks are about 50% of what normal workers are. I had to go in and prove who I am and that I didn't have 12 years of support payments I didn't make just to sell my house.

Government is slow and stupid. Hope it works out for you.

csk_sig,
You have a flag on your name regarding firearms purchase, it is a federal flag, you will be looked at anywhere you move to. :uhoh:

Good Luck

I have a similar problem.

I get this type of delay every time I fill out a 4473. The delay will take from a few hours to a couple of days. In my case it is due to the security clearances I have had.

The funny thing is that I have a C&R, and so have been fully vetted by BATF as a collector. In the case where the gun I want is a C&R, I just give the local dealer my license, and skip the whole 4473 thing.

As to living in California, and dealing with the gun laws there, good luck. You may soon have to register your ammo, and account for each round expended.
