Is it necessary to pass the safety test to rent handguns in CA? The guys in my shop said they weren't sure, but until they were sure there policy would be to require the safety test.

As far as I know, you don't need training for renting, and if you do, I'm breakin' the law! I've also had friends who've rented who don't own and haven't taken the class.

The only time I've seen them balk is when someone new to firearms tries to rent something.

Also, according to an FAQ on the CA DOJ website (http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/index.html):

Is a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) required when a handgun is being loaned?

It depends on the specific circumstances. Generally, a person being loaned a handgun must have a current Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC). However, an HSC is not required when the loan does not exceed three days in duration and the person loaning the handgun is at all times within the presence of the person being loaned the handgun.

No, you do not need an HSC to rent a handgun at a range. Most ranges (like the one I work at) DO require that somebody in the party have handgun shooting experience.

I have seen ranges that require that you watch a video on range rules if you've never been there before, it pretty much just covers how they expect you to act, especially at an outdoor range.
