I recently purchased a Weatherby 7mm and inherited a Winchester model 70 .264 mag. I am set to go on my first a hog hunt with some friends from work. As I am new to rifle hunting (been hunting Dove, Quail and Waterfowl for as long as I can remember) I was wondering what Grain cartrage I should choose for either gun on my hunt? I plan on using the 7mm since I am itching to finally shoot it and my little bro will be shooting the .264. Any and all help would be appriciated.

i used 180gr in 30-06. dropped it dead, A friend used same 180 on his 7mm mauser. both shots were in the head.
I would use 150 for deer.

You got a problem here buko! Those are mega high velocity jobs. You need deep controlled expansion for most Kali pigs. Yes you CAN shoot them at 200+ yards occasionally. 90% of my shots in central Kali are 50-75 yards. At that range either of those guns will blow most bullets. If you don't reload you will need 140 grain premium ammo for the .264 and at least 160 grain 7mm Weatherby ammo. If you reload use A-Frame or Barnes X bullets, or Nosler Partitions.

i reload, use Nosler and Barnes. no blow ups.
My bullet came to its ear, exit in shoulder, friend's came to forehead, did not exit.. 180 and ~200 lb animals. I prefer head shots, ear specially, no need to look for the pig later in the bush..
pretty sure 150 would do the work as well.
Few days ago bobhuters were there, stick 2 arrows in a boar and never recovered it, i found some broken arrow during our hunt.

M1 Garand for Cal hogs?

I plan on hunting feral pigs pretty soon in Riverside at Big Horn Valley Ranch. Any reason not to use my CMP purchased M1 Garand?

I understand most pigs are taken at fairly close range. I figure the iron sights (peep rear, blade front) should be good enough. Plus I've been really itching to hunt with this gun.

I've got 480 rounds of surplus 30-06 ammo from the CMP so no need to reload just yet.

At this place in Riverside, I'm told there's lots of varmints for the taking. It's $395 for a pig hunt, but only $25 if you don't bag a pig. I reckon $25 is OK to pay to spend the day shooting varmints as I come across them.

Thanks in advance.
