LANCASTER - Combining gun safety with shooting practice, 30 women took aim Saturday in a class to help them feel comfortable with a firearm in the home.

Hosted by Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster, and state Sen. William "Pete" Knight, R-Palmdale, the event at The Gun Shop was only the second in the state to be sponsored by the Second Amendment Sisters, a firearm advocacy group.

"At first I was a little nervous but after a while I was very comfortable," said Theresa Quintana, of Palmdale. "My husband signed me up for the course because, in case he's not around, he wants me to know how to fire it."

Runner, a novice shooter, scored well during target practice and began the paperwork to buy a handgun of her own.

The Second Amendment Sisters describes itself as "a women's advocacy group dedicated to preserving the basic human right of self-defense, and to giving attention to the vital role the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution plays in protecting that right."

The 5-year-old group hopes to host workshops all over the country within the next couple of years to educate women in how to use firearms for self-defense.

"My gun is very important to me and the safety of my family," SAS State Coordinator Emily Berg said. "We want women to stand up and say, 'Hey, I have an opinion about firearms."'

Very worth while event. They are springing up all over the country. In our area we have FOUR of them each summer, last year giving away a Glock, and this year, at least three guns being given away. Lots more stuff to give out. Everything is FREE to new shooters, including a personal safety coach.

This is tomorrow's hunters, shooters, gun collectors and voters.

I'm glad ranges/people are trying to bring women into the firearm culture. Factually speaking they need more protection than men in some cases. And besides that if daddy has the gun gene and mommy doesn't then the kid might grow up to be... an anti.

Very easily, if a few experiences of mine at public ranges are anything to go by.

On the subject of female shooters, I saw no less than four women the other night at my local 10-lane indoor range. One of them was renting the MP-5

Well, you are talking Palmdale and Lancaster, probably most of the gunnies in LA moved up there so they could actually get to shoot thier guns ;-).

Used to be lots of free outdoor ranges (DNR land) too, all shut down last I was there.. But a short drive into the high desert and there's plenty of 'outdoor ranges' ;-)

very true braindead There are a lot of gunnies here in the Valley and it's only 15 minutes to where we shoot outside of Rosamond...

I am ashamed to say that I live not more than a mile from the Gun Shop and I didn't know about this event.. That situation HAS been rectified and I will now know about anything that goes on here...

I'll have to go talk to Ron to see how many women showed up as there's not that many shooting lanes there...
