California Legislation
AB 50: Ban .50-Caliber BMG Sniper Rifles

Current law restricts certain "assault weapons" that have specific military features and specific models such as the AK47 series, but there is no general restriction on the sale of armor-piercing, .50-caliber BMG military sniper rifles. AB 50 would ban the sale of .50-caliber BMG sniper rifles and .50-caliber BMG ammunition. People who currently own .50-caliber BMG sniper rifles would be required to register them and could not transfer them to anyone without a special DOJ-issued license.

.50 BMG sniper rifles were created to destroy concrete bunkers and armored vehicles in theaters of war. They have been used effectively by militaries around the world for long range sniping against individual humans from distances up to two miles.

.50 BMG sniper rifles pose an easily obtainable and relatively inexpensive threat to our infrastructure in the hands of terrorists, foreign or domestic. These weapons have the capacity to easily destroy any vehicle that is not heavily armored, including ground and air transportation. .50 BMG sniper rifles also pose an immediate threat to any civilian or military fuel storage facilities such as airports and airbases. Similarly they pose a clear and present danger to petrochemical production and storage facilities, most of which are located near large population centers. It is easy to see a potential Bhopal should these weapons continue to allowed in civilian hands.

The manufacturers of .50 BMG sniper rifles are currently engaged in a competitive race to see which company can produce the least expensive and most portable .50 BMG sniper rifles possible for the civilian markets. There are numerous cases where these weapons have been used in criminal activity or recovered at crime scenes around the country and in California.

I wrote to correct them on the origin of the .50 BMG rifle, nicely, of course.

Then, I noted the following quote:

"There are numerous cases where these weapons have been used in criminal activity or recovered at crime scenes around the country and in California."

And then I asked for a list of the events, or an address where I could examine the data.

I'll pass the data on when they reply: don't hold your breath!
