Cabelas Hawkins trigger question

I'm having a little issue with my cabelas Hawkins percussion cap rifle and hope someone out ther can help me out. When I cock the hammer, pull the set trigger, and then pull the 'bang'/front trigger, the hammer comes down to only the 'safety' position (please forgive my lack of the proper terminigoly as well) and does not strike the cap. When I cock the hammer and simply pull the front trigger, skipping the set trigger, it works fine. Any ideas on how to fix this? I would assume a semi-handy guy could fix this without bringing it to a gunsmith? Thanks in advance for your help!

Most likely: the lock has been pulled too far into the stock and it's interfering with the sear mechanism. Two possible solutions: 1 - loosen the screws holding the lock in place slightly, about a quarter turn at a time, trying the triggers after each increment. 2 - remove the lock, apply lamp black to the moving parts, reinstall, and operate the triggers. Remove the lock and locate the interference by the marks on the wood. Remove the marked wood.

Assume it is double phase set trigger, back one makes front hair.
check that trigger assly. is screwed in tight then mess with the adjusting screws. The trigger must not lift the sear quite enough.
Did it ever work correctly?

Check your Fly, the tip of your sear, and your tumbler for worn or broken edges. Your problem has nothing to do with the trigger assembly.

I'e used/had the rifle for about 4-5 years now and this is the first time it has happened. I'd would guess that I have put only about 30 rounds down range with it too. Id be surprised if wear was the culprit, but I will check. I can try to post some pictures later this evening, assuming that will help.

Here's a TC Hawken parts list including for the lock and trigger. Although yours looks to be left handed, their designs are very similar if not identical.

I would guess that the set trigger adjustment screw has been turned in a little too far. This causes the trigger to slip past the set into the unset position.

Try backing the screw out a little till the set works again. Then fallow TC's Instructions to adjust. (below)

Test the lock while removed from the gun. while holding the cock back, release the sear from the full cock notch. As soon as the sear clears the full cock notch take your hand completely off of the sear and slowly lower the cock toward the half cock position. The tip of the sear should engage the Fly and force the sear to ride past the half cock notch. If the sear catches on the fly and does not ride past it then please post a pic of the lock internals while in this position.

Also just noticed in your middle pic it appears as though the sear is wedged between the lock plate and the fly. Can you verify?

Whosyrdaddy- while futzing with the lock, what you describe is what I think is happening. I'm a complete novice at this but the fly seems very loose in the mechanism, like it moves out of plane of the mechanism, if that makes sense. I'll follow your instructions and post more picks. Also while 'futzing' I did adjust the set screw, after I ran into this problem, could that be the culprit?

That certainly clears it up. The "fly in your ointment" so to speak is the sear wedging itself under the fly. First try tightening the screw that goes through the sear until the sear no longer operates freely then back it out only until the sear reliably and consistently engages the full cock notch.

That did the trick!

However, I am surprised that that 'fix' made the difference. I tried to tighten the screw that goes through the sear but it was locked down tight, so I took that whole plate off, then spent 10 minutes retrieving the spring and spring cap from under the stove. I put it all back together and tightened all 3 screws down good and tight and now it works good. Again none of those 3 screws were noticibally loose though? Oh well it should be good to go for next year.
