I want to get an 1860 Army revolver and like the cost of those sold by Cabelas. My question is: how do these revolvers stack up in quality and accuracy to those offered by other distributers, like Dixie Gun Works? I have a Patterson revolver and all the needed equipment to fire, clean and load, so I don't need anything but the pistol itself and some caps and balls (which I can get at the local gun store).

The following represents my subjective opinion, and will undoubtedly be disputed.

1. The Cabelas revolvers represent good value for the money spent, but I don’t think they are necessarily the best guns. In exchange for the lower price they are a bit rough internally, and may have minor cosmetic issues. However you can do your work polishing the lockwork if you deem this to be necessary.

2. Uberti makes the best Colt reproductions, where Pietta makes the best Remington. Most if not all of Cabelas' guns are made by Pietta.

3. Importers such as Cimarron Arms, Navy Arms Co., Dixie Gun Works, and EMF among others have some better guns, but they cost more. They are “better” in respect to interior fitting and exterior polish and finish, and not necessarily anything more then that. Dixie G.W. offers the largest selection from various other importers as well as themselves, and have a wide offering of accessories.

4. Some of the above listed importers are having sales on selected models. Unlike regular firearms you can buy them over the Internet directly – but check your own state and local laws first. If you find an “on sale” model that fits your needs the price on the better gun may come close to what Cabelas is charging.

So do shop around…:)

I agree with Old Fuff, I got a 51 navy from Cabelas and I had to do a little "cleanup" work on it. Nothing bad, just a few burrs on it. After a little bit of work the gun works great. Very smooth action, and shoots pretty good to boot.

I believe that all revolvers are made by Pietta that Cabelas sells. Be sure to tell us what you go with.

Order it. If you are unhappy for any reason they will be glad to take it back. You don't even have to call they send a return form and mailing label attached to your invoice.

Well, I guess I'll look around first, but I think I'll end up ordering form Cabelas since I had a good experience with them when I ordered a CVA rifle from them.

Look at it this way. Cabela's basically back you up 100%. I bought from them because my experience was if I ever had a problem they would be there and have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make things right with me before. Thus I support them. They care about customers.

Read some of the warranty statements from some the other dealers/importers. They do not give one the warm and fuzzy's.
