Cabela's sent me mismatched, dirty ammo

Let me tumble live ammo in my tumbler using very pointy rounds with you sitting beside it and then I will believe you. Mine is a rotary drum tumbler.

Cabelas doesn't allow returns on firearms or ammunition due to safety concerns (more likely, due to liability concerns). But they still should have taken the complaint seriously.

I've also had trouble with WWB 9mm and in that case, Winchester sent me a certificate to cover the cost of replacing it. I'd contact them.

Update -

Cabela's said they would refund me. They did, however, say, explicitly, that they were giving me the refund because of my dissatisfaction with "perceived" flaws in the ammunition and that the ammunition is 100% and not flawed in any manner. They said that dirt and grime are exactly how Winchester sometimes looks, but is not a defect. I would guess this is due to legal liability, so if I shoot the ammo and it messes up my gun, there's no written admission of liability on their part.

I expect the same response directly from Winchester - that the ammo is great stuff and I'm a retard for not wanting to clean cases before I load them.

So, I'll just toss the suspect ammo in each box and carry on.

FWIW, I told them I'd be happy with a box or two of ammo to cover the couple rounds per box that I felt were defected. I also said I'd be happy with some store credit, as I shop there often and can always find something.

But, I finally pressed for a full refund when they kept emailing back, but not really addressing my comments.

My Sr9 flat out will not fire WWB. I contacted Winchester and they covered my shipping on 800 something rounds, and sent me back 1000. I don't remember the exact numbers but they treated me more than fair...especially considering that it was more the gun not being compatible with the ammo than just defective ammo

Echo the surprise at Cabela's reaction. They've always been very to good to me & friends I know who use them.

Yep. Winchester sent me a certificate to cover replacment of some bad 9mm ammo once. IIRC, the certificate was good for $50 worth of ammo and my problem was with two bulk packs of WWB 9mm back when they were something like $20 each.
I'd be surprised if Winchester didn't do something about this.
I'm actually surprised Cabelas relented and refunded the money. Their policy is not to do refunds or exchanges on ammunition, but it looks like they flexed a little in this case.

I don't see how this is Cabelas fault. Do you think they open and inspect every box of ammo they sell?

Better hope this is the biggest problem you ever have.

This is much ado about nothing. The O.P. complains about the "gunk" on the going somewhere into his gun...

I find myself asking where he finds ammo that does not get his gun dirty from powder residue, bullet fouling in the barrel, oil on the gun collecting dirt and residue.

I don't think Cabela's inspects every round they sell. Are you concerned that I actually think that?

So what if this is or isn't the biggest problem I have? When I pay for something, it should come as advertised.

Whose fault is it? They are the retailer and should stand behind their product. It's someone's fault and it isn't mine.

I think it's ultimately Winchester's fault, but Cabela's fixed it, for which I am appreciative.

So you'd be okay with purchasing ammo that was obviously factory seconds, marketed as regular ammo? And ammo that is obviously grimy?

And FWIW, BSA1, you said in another thread,
In today's tough economic times I, like some other folks, have to carefully choose how I spend my disposable income. So you state I should accept a product that a company was too lazy/cheap/indifferent to make correctly the first time without telling other folks (and I should be thankful they are even willing to try to fix their screwup).

I think the ammo should have been clean and correct.

Thats pretty dirty even for WWB but I would have no problem feeding that to my G19. Cabelas has always done right by me in the past, glad to hear this worked out for you.

Lots of things aren't a retailer's fault, but most reputable ones stand behind the products they sell. Would you expect Nordstrom to tell you to go to the manufacturer for improperly stitched clothing? Or would they just change it out or refund you?

And maybe it is a big problem for him - ammo is hard to find and when it is available, it would be a big disappointment to me to get poor quality rounds when I expected something better.

No, its not cabellas fault, but they should be doing the middleman legwork to make an unhappy customer a happy customer. Say you go to walmart and buy some bath towels. You dont wash these to begin with because who does that, and fresh out of the shower, you are a new shade of green. You wash the towels and they loose their forest green color and go to a sage color. Do you think that walmart is going to want you to get in contact with the company in Indonesia? NO!

Quick wipe down with steel wood and the ammo will be fine. It should take you no more than 30 minutes to wipe the whole 500 rounds. That's not to say they pulled a fast one on you, they did.
