I figure this might as well go here as anywhere else. My darling (and very understanding) wife and I made a pilgrimage to the newly-opened local Cabela's to see how it was set up. I'd already been to the one in Owatonna, MN, but it was just as impressive the second time around. We had fun poking around, bought a dog toy, and plinked a little bit in their little shooting gallery (her idea). It was just one of those little setups where light pulses or something hit targets and actuate spinning/bouncing/falling ducks, et cetera. However, given her usual aversion to anything shaped like a firearm, it was a pleasant surprise. She enjoyed making the moonshine jug spin around, for some reason.

They have a pretty neat collection of guns, both very collectible and more everyday stuff. I wanted to share a couple things we saw, though, and lucked out in finding them on the Cabelas site. The Purdy's purty, but too much for my taste, and the Winchester is just neat.

We'll be going back, for sure. Just not during deer season.

BassProShop is less than 30 min. away from the new Cabela's. It has a great fine gun room. Both are like Mecca (can I say that here; opps I already did.)

And another 20 minutes or so northeast of Bass Pro is Sportsman's Whse. in Lewisville. To me, the new Cabella's seemed to be about those two stores rolled into one. Either way, any of 'em can be rough on an "addict". ;)

I was just in the Buda Cabela's today and saw a beautiful Winchester 1895 in .30-06. It was fully engraved with gold inlays- they had a price on it of only $1295 :what: - Unfortunatly- that is about $1200 more than my current gun budget allows. I got home and immediately searched their gun library on-line so I could drool some more, but could not find it. Rumor has it a Bass ProShop is going in in NW San Antonio.

Since we've had a Bass Pro Shop open up near St. Louis, I've been visiting there frequently. On a recent trip to Kansas, we stopped at the Cabela's in Kansas City, Kansas.

Now I've got Cabela's envy. The local BPS has lost it's luster.

A couple of observations:

Although time didn't permit me to browse the gun counter, I got the distinct impression from the ammo selection that Cabela's isn't (in comparison) run by people who believe that the only purpose anyone would want a firearm is to hunt.

At the same time, there was no mistaking that this is a store that supports hunting - the mounted displays were fantastic! Plus, I didn't see signs up (ala BPS) "apologizing" for the mounts by stating that that they don't endorse the taking of game for trophy purposes. I personally prefer the attitude of "We're a hunting store. We hunt. And kill things. And after they're dead we still like to look at them. Yes, those are two elephants in the Africa display. Both of which were killed by hunters. If you don't like it, get over it."

Anyway, I didn't really start this to slam BPS*, but I'm achin' to go back to Cabelas.

*My comments only apply to my local store, not necessarily the mecca in Springfield, MO.

There's a new BassPro underway in the K.C. Metro. I've been to the Cabela's in KCK, but I went on a weekend soon after they opened. My dislike of crowds kept me from enjoying the store.
The new BassPro is going to be right on I-70, in Independence, MO. From the looks of the amount of earth they're moving, it's going to be huge!
At one time, BPS was looking at the mostly defunct mall right down the street from me. Unfortunately, a couple of retailers use that location as their "loss leaders", and wouldn't give up their lease. Looks like it will be a 10 minute drive for me, instead of a 2 minute walk to get to the new store. :(

Richard.
