I only know what I have read about dangerous game hunting - but, isn't a .303 at "flash burn range" a little dicey?

Yes it is.

Hunting buffalo especially a confirmed man attacker at close range with anything in thick jess is dicey. These guys do it all the time with any rifle they have available.

The .303 is actually a pretty common rifle for the game scouts. They use them on elephants to.
