my friends went gun shopping and they looked up some prices for me. mosins were about 150-185, which is weird cause the running joke is its a 70 dollar rifle. they saw some rifles mixed with the mosins labeled "CAI" as brand that looks like a mosin, same caliber and bolt but different stock but cheaper, at like 100 dollars. what are these?

CAI is Century Arms International
they are the importer. they have to label the rifles with serials and other info as per BATFE regs.
the rifles you probibly saw are "sporter" conversions. basically they take a mosin, chop the stock ( some times on whose original stock was un-salvageable they stick it in a cheap stock) and sell it. this could have been done by century arms or a previous owner.
many generaly consider it a "bubba" job. thats when you take a piece whos value is in the novelty of a historic rifle, and the virtue of a cheap plinker (at this time) and turning it into a sub par "hunting rifle" in the ill thought out idea that it will some how be a better rifle.

The odds of your selection having some non-Century imported Mosins was slim to none.
The angry beavers love their cash, so any Mosins they import with bad stocks, they just stick in a US made 'hunting stock' and sell it anyway.

No way i would spend over 80 bucks on a mosin. Except for a sniper at a decent price.

Around here, Gander Mountain sells Mosins for $150 and the Fleet Farm has them for $165. I satisfied my latest itch with a Steyr but one of these days I'm going to see if they match prices.

It could be an M44. It is the shorter version of the Model 1891/30 Mosin Nagant. One of the other key clues that it is a M44 (aside from the shorter length) is the folding spike style bayonet on the right side.
