Senate approves bill banning gun shows at Cow Palace

Wednesday, May 19, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(05-19) 11:25 PDT SACRAMENTO (AP) --

The state Senate approved a bill Wednesday that would prohibit gun shows at the state-owned Cow Palace in San Francisco.

San Francisco and San Mateo officials had requested the bill, by Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Daly City. Those local governments had already banned gun shows at their local fairgrounds, but the rule doesn't cover the Cow Palace, which is owned by the state.

"This is about communities surrounding the Cow Palace that are deeply concerned about access to guns," Speier said. "They don't want the Cow Palace to have gun shows. ... We have to respect local communities."

Sen. Bill Morrow said it was hypocritical for state lawmakers to ban gun shows, but not other types of shows that could have an influence on the community -- namely the annual Exotic Erotic Ball held at the Cow Palace each October.

The ball is "infamous for its display of human sexuality," said Morrow, R-Oceanside, including pornographers and "live sex acts."

If the state wants to protect the neighborhood from gun shows, he said, it should also protect them from this "unholy activity."

Morrow failed to amend the bill to include a ban on nudity, then told his fellow lawmakers that if they voted against his proposed changes, they were "voting to keep live sex acts in a state facility going on."

Speier's bill was approved 21-13 and now goes to the Assembly.

"This is about communities surrounding the Cow Palace that are deeply concerned about access to guns," Speier said. "They don't want the Cow Palace to have gun shows. ... We have to respect local communities."

Say it with me:

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

So much for individual rights free from government interference. Hell, I'd be much happier if they let both the gunshows and the Exotic Erotic Ball take place. It's not the business of government to discriminate, only private citizens.

I'm sure I'll always miss the temperate climate and beaches

thats what florida is for ;).

i say let them ban gun shows. i wouldnt go to a place called the cow palace anyway.

Moo.

I really can't care anymore about saving CA's RKBA. It's like getting pricked with a pin after taking a hit from a howitzer; it really doesn't matter. Only some miracle will save me.

I hate the beaches, I hate the liberals, I hate the people, I hate the weather, I hate Shwarzenegger...

I need to move.

Bleh.

I certainly hope the promoter follows in the footsteps of the promoter in Houston. He sued in Federal Court that the city was violating his First Amendment right to free speech and peaceable assembly. Guns are legal, so there is nothing wrong with getting together with guns as a common interest. I believe the city paid out about $300,000 and the promoter uses George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston for a show almost every month.

I guess that the governor never shops at the Cow Palace shows, so we might just be doomed. He loves to get along.. with the opposition. I'm sure wify will say sign.

Not that I've ever done anything in particular to assist gun rights,
but apathy isn't the way to go. I know it's trying to live here in this state
and for many reasons, but instead of moving, if any of these issues
means anything to you - feel free to complain to elected officials and get
involved in whatever way you can. Moving, well - what's going to happen
when the same crap starts in the new state of your residence?

Yeah Cali sucks in many different ways, but believe me it's only because
there are squeakier wheels ostensibly representing a "larger" base of constituents than we. Shall we give it away? Yes, many liberals are
trying their best. Let's give the illegal aliens drivers licenses, and then
next voter rights and - oh - we were annexed? When did that happen?
But it's all for the best...

And as I am new to guns and gun rights etc., (will be taking possession
of my first gun after I get my handgun safety cert and wait ten days)
and to these forums, sorry if I misspoke.

Apathy = all is lost.

cheers, ab

Agree, but you still can't go down to the store and buy an AR15. If you leave, you can. Simple.

Our city tired that for our Community Center, No gun shows. The person putting on the show filled suit against the city for discrimination and won.

Now we have gun shows.

But than again you in Cali.

odysseus, any chance of a URL? I have a Relitive who will find that article VERY intresting...

Here is another take on said article :cuss:

Calipornia: Gun Shows Are Naughty but Smut Shows Are Nice

Out on the Left Coast, Democrat foes of the Second Amendment want to ban gun shows from a taxpayer-owned property but keep allowing a porn expo.

"Foreplay got the nod over gunplay Wednesday by state senators deciding what types of shows to allow at the Cow Palace," the San Francisco Chronicle reported today.

California Sen. Jackie Speier is having a cow over firearms shows at the Cow Palace in suburban Daly City.

Democrats defeated attempts by Republicans to amend Speier's bill to ban the annual Exotic Erotic Ball as well.

Exotic Erotic Ball, which touts itself as "the world's wildest and sexiest party," says in advertising for "entertainers": "Can you tie yourself into a pretzel? Have you ever spent a major holiday being impaled? Did you ever run off to join the circus and get rejected?"

Sen. Bill Morrow, a Republican from San Diego County, reminded his colleagues, "You are voting to keep live sex acts in a state facility going on."

Senate President Pro Tem John Burton of San Francisco shot back, "I've never heard of any kids on a playground killed by a live sex act."

However, GOP Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth of Riverside County noted that two people had died at a rave at the Cow Palace in January. He asked Speier whether any gun show there had ever caused a death.

"Are we concerned about rave parties at the Cow Palace? No, we're not," Hollingsworth said. "This is an ideological battle, using the power of the state to take away the rights of people doing something completely legal."

In the end, La-La Land's Senate Democrats got their way and passed Speier's bill. If the Assembly approves it, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must decide whether to sign or veto it.

Maybe flood Ahnold with reponses? Our non-Democrat (sensitivity) lawmakers are on our side.
