Senate approves bill banning gun shows at Cow Palace

The state Senate approved a bill Wednesday that would prohibit gun shows at the state-owned Cow Palace in San Francisco.
San Francisco and San Mateo officials had requested the bill, by Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Daly City. Those local governments had already banned gun shows at their local fairgrounds, but the rule doesn't cover the Cow Palace, which is owned by the state.
"This is about communities surrounding the Cow Palace that are deeply concerned about access to guns," Speier said. "They don't want the Cow Palace to have gun shows. ... We have to respect local communities."
Sen. Bill Morrow said it was hypocritical for state lawmakers to ban gun shows, but not other types of shows that could have an influence on the community -- namely the annual Exotic Erotic Ball held at the Cow Palace each October.
The ball is "infamous for its display of human sexuality," said Morrow, R-Oceanside, including pornographers and "live sex acts."
If the state wants to protect the neighborhood from gun shows, he said, it should also protect them from this "unholy activity."
Morrow failed to amend the bill to include a ban on nudity, then told his fellow lawmakers that if they voted against his proposed changes, they were "voting to keep live sex acts in a state facility going on."
Speier's bill was approved 21-13 and now goes to the Assembly.
