caliber conversion

Depends on the gun. I would say a Webley MKVI, no. If it is a Colt New Service, or S&W N-frame, then yes. I have a 1915 S&W 2nd Model Hand Ejector that came already altered to .45 Colt from .455, and I like it so much, I found another .455 just like it and had it altered. The conversion on tht gun was simple. Just the cylinder had to be recessed at the rim to allow the .45 Colt to seat in just a little, as its rim is thicker than the .455. The chamber was already bored long, and allowed the .45 Colt case to go in. A .455 can be checked by placing a .45 Colt case in a chamber and seeing if it goes most or all the way in. If it goes in, but the cylinder won't close, the revolver would need the alteration I just described. NOTE: Do not load heavy for these old revolvers. Standard .45 Colt or light loads are recommended. I like mine too much to recklessly damage them with stiff loads.

Thanks for the reply. I have a line on a Colt New Service in .455 and your reply gives me something to work on.

Thanks again.

Unless the gun is much worn or already altered in some way, you would be hurting its collector interest and resale value by rechambering.

If I had one, I would just load .455 for it.

Yeh, Depends on the condition. I've been reading about the 455 and I tend to agree with you.

Sounds like the 455 is going for a premium these days.

I appreciate the input.

Talked to the owner tonight, he's not a gun guy but took the gun to a local "expert/crook" and he low balled the guy something fierce.

According to the appraisal the gun has Franzite grips, some "blood spotting" and finish is pretty poor. He told the owner the gun should have wood grips, which appears to be incorrect if the gun actually has British proof marks.

Knowing the "appraiser" and his tactics, it may be worth a look.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow to see what it is. If it is nice and I can get it at a reasonable price, I'll probably grab it and keep it as it is.

If I don't get it, I can at least give the guy some additional insight and a more reasonable price than he got from the local dealer.
