Caliber info

With your newest criteria and a mention of 400 max I would go 6.5. If you want to go farther out a 6.5 will do it, depending on the specific 6.5 cartridge you choose.

If it were me, for an auto I would get a grendel. Odin works and (if you can find one) Sabre Defence make excellent examples of AR barrels for the 6.5 grendel. I had a Sabre PMR for a while that was extremely accurate. It became where it was only a challenge to hit a 6" plate if I went over 500 yds. Lapua scenar 123's worked well.

For a bolt I would go up to the Creedmoor. Savage 12 would be my choice, but if wanting to spend less id probably get a 10 or a Wby Vanguard. With both of these calibers I'd say you get points for being different if that's what you're going for.

Last time I priced a box of 6.5 creed, I sh*t my pants. $40 plus for a box of 20? I don't think so. I have massive respect for the caliber and it's surrounding guns, but that's outrageous. I was honestly considering an ar10 built by a national long range shooter friend. Got bored and went to 7mm. Price wasn't bad, weight of the gun was extremely heavy, but weight wasn't an issue. What about 270 or 243? I'm not so informed on those other than the 270 in a 30-06 necked down. Same with 25-06. 25-05 and 22-250 have interested me as well, but with the 22-250, I'm worried about barrel life.

I guess being different is expensive sometimes. But once you start reloading it won't cost any more than to load 308 if you keep your brass.

I think of 270 as a hunting caliber, could just be me. Im sure it would be fine at any reasonable distance. 243 can be very accurate and a pleasure to shoot many rounds because recoil is light. The 243 is a necked down 308. Same logic as the 25-06 and 270 being a necked down 30-06.

I'm a fan of the quarter bore. I like the 25-06 and 257 Wby. I've never had a 257 bob but im sure id like it too. I dabbled with stretching out with the 25-06 using a Vanguard and a Steyr M-III and it did reasonably well with Matchkings.

I have no input on 22-250.

I've heard bad things about the steyr from my main gunsmith. He said the ones he's gotten in don't group, they pattern. And recoil is no part of the discussion. A, I can take recoil. B, if it's bothersome, said gunsmith has a compensator that'll remove said recoil. Think 10 ga to 410.

Ok, I'm a moron. It never occurred to me the bullet selection for 300 BLK. This is definitely for me. Now on to find a rifle.

300 blk recipes

Need some help please. I was left some reloading componets, and I need a few recipes using these items. I can't find a recipe to match.

What I got is 2 boxes of Hornady 180 gr spire point boat tail #3072
2 boxes of Hornady 180 gr SST boat tail #30702
3 one lb cans of Lil-Gun powder
8 one lb cans of Blc-2 powder
also have both CCI and Win primers

Does anyone have the recipe for the Grains and the OAL using these bullets and powder. Or something that will get me in the ballpark. I would rather not change to something else, as I need to use these.
Thanks in advance.

LOL. As I was reading this thread, I kept coming back to 300blk in my mind. Plenty of .308 bullet choices, from super to sub sonic, FMJ to coated. And the best part is you can, if you need to, make your brass from .223 cases which are plentiful and cheap. I don't have a 300blk, but have a close friend that does, and we both reload and share info. He also has a suppressor for his 300blk AR.

I'm looking for a caliber that I can reload cast as well

I want something I can plink with (within 200yds) and seriously target shoot with.
How about .300 BLK?

Lee sells 150/230 gr bullet molds you can powder coat for super/subsonic loads using A1680/W296/H110/H4198/H4227 powders.
Forget what I've said previously. Name a round I can load for less than $1.06/rd.

Yes, like .30-06, .300 BLK is a versatile round that could go from 110 gr supersonic loads to 245 gr subsonic loads.

Since it uses 30 caliber bullet, your selection is vast and benefit from bulk/surplus military projectiles for lower cost reloading not to mention widely available (and probably lowest cost) .223/5.56 brass.

And now the fun begins.

What to choose ... what to choose. :D

If you want to shoot heavier subsonic loads, I would suggest going with pistol length gas tube over carbine length gas tube as pistol length is more versatile and will work with a wider range of loads.

I have to echo what Toprudder said... reading through this thread I was getting pretty astonished 300blk wasn't higher up the list of considerations. The vast powder/bullet selection make it a dream for someone who likes to 'tinker'.
