Greetings all,

I've recently been interested in purchasing a Class III firearm. Even though I live in California, there doesn't seem to be too much hassle involved. My CLEO is a friendly, pro-gun guy and would more than likely vouch for me. I know several of his subordinates who could also vouch for me.

Does anyone here have any experience with purchasing Class III firearms? I realize there's a moderate amount of paperwork involved, but many have said "Oh, it's really not as bad as you think...", which scares me a bit more. Government agencies without lots of paperwork?

That said, I'm looking at some sort of submachinegun, like an MP5, MP5K, or maybe the MP5SD (but California doesn't allow suppressors, so I suppose that would be out). Maybe an UZI? Something small, easily portable, and easily handled by others. Having an M1919 belt-fed machinegun would be nice, but expensive. The MP5 series shoots 9mm, which is plentiful and cheap...

The $200 tax stamp isn't that big of a deal, but the insane prices of Class III firearms is. I'm avoiding the M-16 and M-4 series, as they are absurdly inflated due to high demand. Even the tin-pot MAC-10 is nearly $9,000.

If anyone here has experience purchasing Class III firearms (espescially if they purchased them in California), I would be very much obliged if I could talk to you off-forum. If you know any Class III dealers in the SF Bay Area, I'd be much obliged if you could tell me where they are, so I could talk to them in person.

Cheers!

I dont live in CA anymore but MGs have been illegal for civilians for a long time there. Unless you work with the movie industry, ahve a Class 3 dealer license or are a law enforcement or military agency, forget about it.

Move to a real state.

Your CLEO may be the nicest, most pro-gun guy on Earth. It doesn't matter. Private machinegun ownership in California requires a permit from the state DOJ:
12230. The Department of Justice may issue permits for the possession, manufacture, and transportation or possession, manufacture, or transportation of machineguns, upon a satisfactory showing that good cause exists for the issuance thereof to the applicant for the permit, but no permit shall be issued to a person who is under 18 years of age.
What is "good cause" is left as an exercise to the reader. You won't get one.

IF you could get one, an Uzi's not a bad way to go. Relatively inexpensive, sturdy, cheap (9mm) ammo.

John

MP5's and variants run from 7-8k on up. Not that it matters in Kali.

If you know where an MP5 is for $7-8K, I'll take it now, and I'll pay in cash.

Best I've seen is around $12K

Fellas, fellas. Lets give the guy a chance. According the info provided, if he can get a permit from the state DOJ, he can get one. Of course, that is the feat to end all feats. Now, I wish you the best of luck. If it is indeed possible, even remotely, and you ahve the heart to try, go for it! Do the paperwork, lobby the guys that make the decision, try and try again. You might just get one!

Class III Weapons in California

To be able to purchase and/or possess Class III or any NFA weapons in California you must qualify in one of two catagories: 1) FFL with Class III license and DOJ permit obtained after receiving letters from at least three law enforcement agencies stating that they will use the licensee to purchase and repair their guns and equipment. or 2) A movie props company (like Stembridge Arms or Idependent Studio Services) licensed to possess these weapons by ATFE and CADOJ. There is no provision in CA law for private citizens to own these weapons and accessories. :banghead: They are all declared contraband and if you are caught with them, the penalties are almost identical to the federal penalties.

The only break we get here is that carrying a concealed weapon without a permit is a misdemeanor rather than felony. This is definitely not a "gun-friendly" state.

CaCrusin

Hmm. Well, I guess that rules that out... :banghead:

Perhaps I'll get a machinegun when I move out of state.

Thanks for all the replies. Now, if we could only convince Reed Knight and Hollywood to start selling their Class III firearms on the open market again. :D

If you really want a machinegun, you can still do this. You just can't bring the gun into California. One way would be to buy the gun and then just transfer it to a dealer in an adjoining state, and have him hold it for you until you move out of state and can have it transferred to you. The other way would be to start a corporation in an adjoining state, and transfer the gun to the corporation.

Either way, purchasing whatever you want now, versus waiting until you move out of California is almost certainly guaranteed to save you money.
