My mother-in-law received an XDm for Christmas (Go Mom), and she asked me if she had to do anything if she took it to California (she lives in Arizona). I researched and found these stipulations:

-Can't have a magazine that can hold more than ten rounds.
-While transporting it has to be unloaded and in a locked container, a trunk will count.

These are the only two restrictions, but I could've swore she would have to register it or there was some kind of ID system. I can't find anything that says this, so I wanted to ask an actual person before I give her bad advice. So the questions are 1) does she need to do any kind of registering with California and 2) are there any other stipulations? Thank you all and Merry Christmas.

Another question came up, instead of finding a ten round magazine, I found a site that sells limiting blocks that will get the magazines down to 10 rounds. Will this satisfy the restriction?

Call a local gun shop in the area where she is going to live or be at and ask them. That would be my suggestion.

#1. She is only visiting. So, there is no need to register the handgun.
#2. See #1.

Which XDM is it?

The XDM-45 uses the same magazines as the XD-45, so you can get factory 10 round magazines.
There are no factory XDM-9 or XDM-40 10 round magazines. So, they need to be permanently modified to 10 rounds in order to be CA legal.

Because CA law requires permanent modification, in CA, the limiting blocks are used in conjunction with epoxy and/or rivets. [PC 16740(a)]

CA Penal Code 16740
As used in this part, "large-capacity magazine" means any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
(a) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
(b) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
(c) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.
