But, a frantic mother with a firearm could have prevented this.

Dad Charged With Tossing Baby Girl Out 7-Story Window; She Lives
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/wabc_062303_babytoss.html

(Peekskill-AP, June 23, 2003) — A Westchester man has beeen arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly tossing his 10-month-old daughter out the seventh-floor window of her mother's apartment. Miraculously, the girl lived, suffering only cuts and bruises.

Peekskill police say the incident began late Saturday night, when Willie Williams barged into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in the Bohlmann Towers Complex in a bid to persuade her to get back together with him.

Police say Williams forced the woman to get in his car and go for a ride. He ultimately drove her back to the apartment and while continuing to argue with her began dangling the baby, Meana Williams, out a window.

Police say the mother called 9-1-1. While she was on the telephone, police said, Williams dropped the girl.

"Oh, my God!" police quoted the mother as telling the 9-1-1 operator. "He killed my baby."

But the girl survived the 80-foot fall, crashing through several tree branches before landing on the ground.

Williams then left the apartment, grabbed the baby and drove her to Phelps Memorial Hospital, where she was expected to recover.

Williams was charged with attempted murder, assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Why was it useless?????

Why don't you say the womans common sense was useless.....why didn't she scream......run..kick the guy in the gonads????

She was taught to call 911

Why don't you say the womans common sense was useless.....why didn't she scream......run..kick the guy in the gonads????

You are suggesting she should ASSAULT
the troubled man? You know in ENGLAND
you would be arrested for "kicking the guy" .
And all her life she has been fed this "just comply" junk and has seen in the MOVIES That calling 911 will result in the immediate arrest and conviction in a half hour and she will go on to movie of the week.

I'm not sure calling 911 was useless. It put the incident on tape for courts to hear later in testimony that would match the recording and probably not match the defendants story.

Was this in England? Where's peekskill? Pa? If it was not England why bring it up? I'm confused as to the relevance about England unless it happened there.

911 brings cops as a rule. Better they are on their way than not called to my thinking.

No description as the size disparity between the combatants but lets assume there was some between the mother and defendant due to gender differences.

Let me get this straight, he was trying to reconcile with her and is having no success at the attempt. He grabs the baby and dangles it out the window, I see now, that is going to ingratiate him to her again by putting the toddler in jeopardy of death.

So Desertdog, why the post about 911 being useless? You didn't think the cops were goign to immediately appear through the phone did you?

One more question for you sir. What you suggest she do if not call 911 which usually brings a rapid response from the blue team.
If you think 911 is useless, I would be very interested in your proposals that could have brought a quicker resolution of the problem for her.

She probably would not want to shoot him while dangling the baby out the window if she had a gun. I think the response from fire and police would have to be the only alternative to resolution and hope for the best.

You weren't alluding to the cops not being able to be there in time to catch the baby were you? I realize some in blue think they may be superman and can fly like the wind but in reality we are flesh and blood like yourself.

I'd be interested in how you think she should have resolved it.

Steve is right. The fault here is not with the 911 or 999 phone system at all, but with the players. People call those numbers and expect God to descend from the sky and stop said horrible events when it comes to violent acts.

Have you ever noticed that folks like Nicole Brown Simpson will call 911 as somebody like OJ Simpson is activily trying to gain access to the room where the person is, but that if the house was on fire, they would probably leave the house without calling 911? Most folks are bright enough to know not to remain in a burning structure, but somehow think that being on the phone with 911 will protect them from some attacker.

The fault is NOT with 911 or 999, but the people using the system who are clueless as to its application and expectations. Nobody ever promised that calling 911 would magically put rescuers in your home at that instant. If it worked that way, most of y'all would be complaining about Big Brother, invasion of privacy, and too much government.

Desert Dog's contention that a frantic mother with a gun could have prevented the incident is equally problematic. Granted, I think the potential for success would have been higher than calling 911, but there is no indication that a frantic person with a gun would necessarily bring things to a sucessful conclusions. The woman obviously showed no ability in trying to stop the guy from doing what he did and was not activily fighting him to save the baby.

A 'frantic mother with a firearm" maybe could have prevented the incident. My guess is that the word "frantic" is critical here. Frantic people often don't make good decisions. A mother properly trained in the use of a firearm for defense would be much more likely to have prevented things. Then again, so could a mother properly trained in self defense or one using pepper spray could have prevented said events. Guns are NOT the answer for all problems. There would have been many ways in which these events could have been stopped much earlier in the sequence had the woman been of the right mind and had the right training to pull them off. The baby was not dropped from the woman's apartment, but from his. So, the woman had ALL the time from when he entered her apartment, forced her down to his car, driving across town, getting out, and going up to his apartment. You really have to wonder how or why she didn't try to stop the attack sooner.

Lessons learned?

Choose your partners carefully. (Right. As If!)

Don't get in ex-boyfriends cars.

Don't let ex-boyfriends into apartments.

Don't emulate Mikeyl Jackson's actions.

That's one heck of a lucky baby!!!

9-1-1 isn't really useless, its just not one of those immediate solutions to an immediate problem; timely, yes... instantaneous, no.

Willie probably isn't going to enjoy his time in jail and/or prison.

Adios

I don't think she could have owned a gun while living as a guest of a HUD project (then again I don't think they should vote either). They now are probably going to screw all the windows closed in thier projects.
