Calling the HR troops--Need some help debating antis on line

Since Michael Moore closed his forum, a small group of people have been arguing the pros and cons of gun ownership over here:

I've been working hard to hold back the tide, but recently a new batch of antis and a few trolls have arrived and I just don't have the time to deal with them. If you want to enlighten some very dark minds, this is a good chance. Most of them are under the delusion that "Bowling for Columbine" is a documentary.

Uh, no offense meant, but isn't debating anti-gun folks who refuse to see logic on Michael Moore's forum a little like trying to convince a Great White Shark to go vegan while you are skinny dipping with bloody pork chops tied to your ankles?

Folks who agree with Michael Moore think that logic itself is nothing more than an evil scheme cooked up by evil rich white men for the specific purpose of oppressing women, minorities and union members.......


Don't waste your energy or time, I say.

Talking reason with Michael Moore fans would be like trying to convert Osama Bin Laden to Judaism.......

just lurked over there for a few minutes Cosmoline. Not a lot of intelligent discourse. You should have them come this way to see whether their "columbine prejudices" are realized. My guess is that those knuckle-dragging leftists don't have the SAT scores to play with this group.

I don't argue with anti's anymore. It's like talking to a brick wall.
I don't think I'll ever convince one to think my way and I sure as heck know
they'll never win me over to their way. I just vote for the least "anti" politician(hard to find a REAL pro-gun politician) and pay my dues to the NRA and hope for the best.

Instead of arguing with antis, here's what I do.

I invite them to the range politely, and with a smile.

I give them a polite, friendly safety briefing, and put a .22 in their hands.

When they start grinning, I show them the .38 and the .357, some of them even go all the way to .45.

But I don't argue with antis, I take them shooting.

The question is this: Where is the undecided middle? Is this a forum where its all pretty much preaching-to-the-choir, or is this a board with a fairly broad make-up, where fence-sitters are in attendance and able to be swayed? If it is the former (read: a Anti-Gun Self-Affirmation Society), don't waste your time. If it is the latter, however, fight the good fight. Each time They resort to inane arguments or name calling and you can keep your composure and be calm, collected, respectful and professional, you will win converts to our side. Of course, every time you snap and bite off some twit's head, you'll lose ground, too. TANSTAAFL, after all.

I'm right there with you in my support and I like your post on their forum. I don't know if it's a worthy cause to go and argue about firearms and the 2nd amendment on a movie forun though. Good luck to you in the fight, you'll be going up against a lot of close-minded people who are blind as to what a logical arguement is. (I wanted to say "morons" there, but I guess it wouldn't be very nice... oh wait, I did just say it, doh!)

I like Hillbilly's idea of taking them to the range and putting a .22 in there hands. A scoped rimfire rifle is a blast if it hits where its aimed.
It won't take long for the grinning.
Be sure to stress safety so they can get the idea that guns are like tools or anything else that can be dangerous if not used properly.

Great post Jeff. I loved how you completely bi**hslapped their argument with reasoned and tactful responses.

Just use the "people is found in other amendments and places" argument and then state that if the right of owning guns is the government's right or the right of government funded operations, then the BOR has no meaning except to the governmental departments and funded operations. Therefore, according to their own "logic", they cannot speak out and cannot have protection against unreasonable and illegal search and seizure. Their "logic" pretty much argues away every right they have, use, and cherish every day, if followed out to its logical conclusion. They hate it when you use logic, and its a great feeling. It feels like.....VICTORY!!!!

After using said argument, chuckle gleefully as their face looks similar to a monkey doing calculus. Its a hobby of mine to make people do that. Its quite entertaining.
