I am looking to do some coyote hunting in the Southwest (AZ, NM, TX). I see three or four standard types of camo at the sports store. Who can help me out in deciding the right one? I assume one with not too much green, being that I am in mostly desert areas. Need help.

I like ASAT-All Season All Terrain. Stuff blends into just about anything.

If you don't like the ASAT, check out some of the other light open patterns like Natural Gear, Prairie Ghost, River Ghost or patterns like Predator.

Stay away from the military patterns and the crap found in Walmart and similar places. They're too dark and blob up at distance. Most of that stuff is like most fishing lures...........designed to catch your money rather than fish.

You might consider mixing the patterns. I do that deer hunting. I've seen on tv hunting shows several hunters and guides do the same. Suppose to break up your body outline better than a solid pattern. But, who really knows. Haven't read any info on the subject from the animal point of view. :what:

I use 3 different patterns here depending on the area.

First is the Seclusion 3D open country from Cabelas. Also use the 3d Konifer for areas with more mesquite trees.

Also going to try Prairie ghost camo as well to see how it blends in;

You can get a sort of generic camo, but you should match it to the terrain you will be hunting. I use the Seclusion 3D Open Country for most of my fall hunting, but I'll be suiting up in the 3D Konifer for spring turkeys. You should get out into the area to check what it will really be like, and then pick out a pattern or two that match it as closely as possible.

I've got three patterns of camo, Weatherby Wool late season gray, Prarie Ghost 3D suit, and Predator Fall gray. I wear each according to climate and location I'm hunting (Eastern WA vs. Western WA).

I like the open patterns like ASAT, Predator, or Cabelas Outfitter pattern because they break up your outline better. The realtree patterns and other more detailed patterns look good up close, but take a look at them from a distance. You'll see they look very dark and you can see the outline very easy.

Now for hunting coyotes, I think it is more important to find a good stand location with good cover, enter your stand quietly and pay attention to wind direction. Once in your stand be still and quiet (except for calling). Look with your eyes, not your head. I think these are more important than camo.
