well turkey season is soon approaching. every year for some reason, its the same story when shopping for camo. it doesnt matter if its dicks, wal mart, cabelas, gander mountain, or anywhere else they seem to stock a ridiculous supply of xxl, xxxl, and xxxxl clothing. I swear its easier to find a xxxl shirt in camo at a store than it is to find a medium or large. are most hunters really giant people or is this just nonsense. I have a hard time finding normal hunting clothing that I dont swim in, when i do find normal sizes its after wading through an entire rack of ridiculous sizes. im not a small guy either 5'8 and medium build, but for some reason most hunting clothing is geared toward the 300+ lb hunter. nothing against anyone 300+ lbs but youd think theyd have more clothing in normal sizes. for clothes that arent camo i dont normally see piles of giant sizes. anyone know why this is? i know im not the only one whos noticed this

Well the tide has turned. I remember when it only went S, M, L and XL. If you were a large person you were out of luck. I guess the smaller guys will just have to mail order hunting clothes like I used to have to do.

It's the stereotypes of hunters being beer swilling fat rednecks - lets call the stores racist on TV, and get them to pony up some dough! How about some "sensitivity" training on hunters?:D

As a XXL myself, it's nice to see big sizes in the stores now, it hasn't allways been that way. I have also noticed that alot of folks get cammo in a larger size than they normally wear. Now this may be partly because ther are more big ones avalable, or it may be like my 3 sons, they allways get a size larger so they can layer more easly under them.

I figure the S, M & L sizes have already been sold to the early-bird shoppers - you know, the women putting together their Easter outfits. ;)

I've noticed the same thing - but trust me on this one, stores don't stock all the XL (and up) stuff because they think all hunters are beer-bellied rednecks. They stock that stuff because that's what sells. Numbers don't lie, and they've only got a limited amount of retail floor space to stock products on. They use sales figures to determine what goes in that space, and sales figures say the big stuff sells better.

I wear medium shirts and medium pants, and I do most of my hunting-clothes shopping at the Bass Pro Outdoor World in Concord, NC. You'd think that a store as big as an aircraft hangar (with literally acres of camo) would stock all sorts of different sizes, but it just doesn't happen. Just about every time I go in there I'll see something I like, only to find they only carry it in L, XL, and XXL.

So what do I do? I write down the name of the stuff I like, then I go home and order it in my size from the Bass Pro website. They've got the right sizes there.

I don't know about you, but when it's 20 degrees out and I'm gonna be imobile in a blind for several hours, I wear several layers of clothing. Since the cammo must be worn on the outside to be effective, that means it's gonna be the largest size I put on, to fit over everything else and still allow for free movement, so I usually require it a couple sizes bigger than I normally wear. Being a big guy to begin with, that makes for some really large size requirements. I don't wear cammo as a fashion statement, so I wouldn't need it in my actual size, but even a medium around here would need an XL anyway. Not to mention that if the clothes are manufactured in asia, they can often run small...

If you are immobile hiding in a camo blind in 20 degree weather why do you need camo clothes? the blind should keep you hidden unless im missing something. its never made sense to me to completely cover in camo for deer season then put a bright orange vest over top of it. about the only thing camo is a necessity for around here is turkey season since they see so good.(yes, you can kill deer without being covered in head to toe with realtree, ghillie suit, and face paint). In southern ohio and kentucky its usually pretty warm during turkey season but the clothing sizes are still usually gigantic. On a side note, the funniest thing I ever heard someone tell me at gander mountain happened the other day. I was buying a camo shirt and camo pants. The lady at the register said,"You can't do that!". and i said do what. she said "you cant wear mossy oak with real tree, it doesnt match" I had a hard time stopping laughing at her and laughed most of the way home

I don't wear camo at all, OK? However the premise holds true, that it needs to go OVER your other clothes...I doubt I would bother to wear it for turkey or varmints, either. I know I don't use it for duck. I'm simply addressing your question about so many places having mostly larger sizes.

BTW, I make blinds with a few branches stuck in the ground to break up my outline. I'm not about to lug a cammo blind into the woods, since i don't ride an ATV to within 50 feet of my stand...

Why not? I do that every year.

For one thing, I'm a redneck - and we groove on camo like hippies love tye-dye.

For another, I bowhunt, rifle hunt, turkey hunt, squirrel hunt, you name it. Only deer season with a gun requires me to wear orange. So if I'm going to buy a hunting jacket (for example) I buy it in a good camo pattern. Won't mean much with a blaze orange vest over it, but it will be exactly what I need for the rest of the year.

I'm with Card. Not having the means to finance a total fashion ensemble for every species I hunt(like the guy on Berreta World), I generally wear the same hunting clothes for all the hunting I do.(with a blaze orange vest for gun deer season). Hell I even wear em fishin'.

I'm sure the reasons they run low on the sizes you need bro, are the same reasons I can never find a good pair of boots on sale. Being a average guy with average needs tends to be what the majority of us are.......most demand, first to sell out. I find that irregardless of what Bill Jordan says, most of the time military style camo works as well as reatree or mossy goat and it's generally cheaper. I shop a lot of miltary surplus and watch the closeouts at walmart. The time to buy them is when you find what you like at a good price, not right before hunting season. The new fashion trend for young urbanites has created a lot of camo sportswear in the general clothing areas and I have picked up some very nice camo cargo pants with zip off legs and bands at the ankles for me and the boy in regular clothing stores in the last month for less than $18.
