I obtained this gun when my grandfather died. I heard from somewhere that it is called a pepperbox, but that is all I have ever heard of it. Between each barrel is a small symbol that I can’t quite make out. The butt of the gun has what looks like either a monkey or lion head. I wish I could take better pictures of the gun but my camera decided to quit on me. So if anyone could tell me anything about this gun I would really appreciate it.

I believe that is a beautiful example of an Ethan Allen Pepperbox pistol. Give ya $50 for it, lol. haha, I'm sure it's worth much more than that.

Mostly those were french made but some were Brittish and American. They were called a pepper box, Im not sure where yours was produced unless I could inspect it closely.

Also, it looks like a 38 caliber prpperbox, but I wouolld not try to load and shoot it as it was definitely mabufactured for black powder loads.

Yes, it is a pepperbox, the generic name for a multi-barrelled revolving firearm, common in the 1850s. I would say yours is of European make, the "mask" on the butt is more common there than here where most pepperboxes were plain roundbutts. The little marks between the barrels that you can't read are probably proofmarks. If you could decipher them, it would likely indicate the country of manufacture. European makers did not always put their names on their guns, either because they would be wholesaled to a dealer who might want to put his name on it or because they just didn't have the brand recognition we do.

This is a long shot, but the small "proof" mark on the barrel, as seen in the full length photo, looks like a "JU", which is the mark of Jukar, a current Spanish firm that makes replica black powder percussion guns, including Pepperboxes.

Suggestion: post in the blackpowder section, also if there are any possible proof marks try to get a clear photo and post it.

Nice looking pepperbox.
