Hey all, I am having a problem with my Model 12 and I am wondering if I have a missing or broken part that is making my shotgun act this way. Anyone up for diagnosing it? (X-post from Calguns)

There is a retainer, it is a half circle shape on(viewing from the bottom) the right side. It is designed so that it only works to hold the shells in the magazine WHILE the carrier is on the way up to the chamber and on the way almost down at which point it releases the shell for the next trip up. If it was not there your shells would spill out while the carrier is up. Most of the Benelli auto loaders work the same way.

Look for part # 11012 it is called cartridge cutoff:

Can be seen better in this diagram: part # 29

Yes I watched the OP video(if you are talking about the model 12 and not the Model 500) and yes you should NOT press the carrier with your finger or another shell unless you're loading that shell. Yes the shells will fly out just like in the video.
If it was not there your shells would spill out while the carrier is up

Mine is that way too. It functions fine. This situation is really quite different than a 1200, 1300 or an 870, where you are used to them being retained more into the mag.

If you would like to get it looked at, may I suggest Stu Wright. He is the Model 12 Guru that all the Trapshooters use. Call Stu and email him a link to the video. From what I see its normal.
