I picked up a stainless S&W 38 special from the pawnshop today for $190

It has a pinned 4'' barrel marked 38 S.&W.SPECIAL CTG.

The rear sight is a square notch and groove integral with the top strap. The top of the gun is a non glare type grey finish.

Below the cylinder it reads:
MADE in USA
MARCAS REGISTRADAS
SMITH & WESSON
SPRINGFIELD. MASS.

When I open the cylinder it reads
64-3
740XX (I xed out the last 2 numbers just in case)
with a sideways 3 next to the serial number

On the bottom of the grip frame is another number
1D917XX (another serial number?)

This gun was leaded and dirty but looks nice after a cleaning.
The trigger pull is great, rifling is crisp and the lockup feels tight.

Does anyone know any more about this revolver (value, age etc...?

Thanks in advance

What you appear to have is a S&W Model 64-3 which was made in 1980. The Model 64 is a very nice gun. The first Model 65 (in .357 Magnum) was made from this gun. It's a good, sturdy pistol which should give you many years of good service.

Your Model 64 is the stainles steel version of the Model 10 . (K-frame) It came with barrel lengths of 2 , 3 or 4 inches with the 3&4 inch versions being heavy barrel. (non adjustabe sights)

Not sure what current prices are , but I think you bought it very reasonable.

1D917XX is the serial number of your Model 64-3.

740XX is the S&W assembly number. It's there to kame sure the correctly fitted cylinder assembly gets installed into the right frame after final finishing.
