Can anyone identify this pistol?

Sorry there's no pic. All the info I have on it is as follows.

Stamped on slide:

"M84 Automatic"

"Cal. 9mm Short"

"MFG Marushin"

It has a serial number that begins with "Y"

It is quite unusual as it is almost entirely plastic INCLUDING THE BARREL!

The barrel also has what appears to be a factory installed obstruction that doesn't seem to be removable.

It has a double stack magazine with a full load of dummy rounds.

It is functional as racking the slide will eject and cycle a round. I didnt try to pull the trigger however. Naturally it does not fire given the obstruction.

My best guess is it looks Russian, similar to a Makarov or M52 and that it was possibly a trainer used to familiarize people with the operation of a fully functional firearm of similar design.

So anybody got any good info on this?

Sounds like either a model kit replica or airsoft. Probably a replica since you said the barrel was obstructed. Marushin makes scale models if I remember correctly. Don't know what it could be a replica of, maybe check that Russian small arms of the world website?

A quick search on Marushin will reveal that they make blank-firing and non-firing replicas for toys, film props, etc. They may also make Airsoft type guns as well, not sure on that.

When in doubt, try your friendly neighborhood search engine.

Didn't Berreta make a "Model 84" chambered in .380 (a.k.a. 9mm Short)? Might it be a replica of that?

Apparently fully functional when used with "blowback caps" that will make noise, smoke and cycle the action.

I thought it had a Berretta look to it when I first saw it but also though it looked A little Russian-ish too.

I think a prop gun that realistic is asking for someone to get hurt. Looking at the attached link, I can imagine someone trying to fire the real deal through there.

I found the same link when I used my "search engine. (duh, why didn't I think of that?) (I guess I figured it'd be more fun to post it here.)

The realism is what gets me. I didn't realize the barrel was plastic until I took a thorough close up look at it. It seemed awfully light and I thought, "Gee, where has this been all my life."

One other danger is someone (especially some dumb kid) trying to use it as a scare tactic and getting themselves shot by a real one.

Yep, I use these for films- I have a small props rental and fight coordination business. Problem is the damn things jam all the time- the full auto ones especially- and the brass is really expensive to replace (they use re-loadable brass and little 5 or 7mm caps inside)... but there aren't a whole lot of legal and affordable options when it comes to fully automatic machine guns that will spit brass and make smoke.

I've got their Mac-11, M4, USP, Uzi, and a little .22 target semi-auto.

MGC (model gun co), marushin, and hudson are the most common brands of this type. Gunbroker.com has things like this frequently too.

Most everygun we see on TV or in movies spittin' brass rapidly is probably a plastic model?

Now I searched for a little while but could not come up with the country of manufacture for Marushin. They don't appear to have a website of their own.

Anyone know where they are made?

They do make some metal models too, but it's cast...cheap stuff that would never hold up to a real gunshot.

Actually, half the guns you see are probably rubber or resin.

I think Marushin, MGC, and Maruzen are all based in Japan. Big model gun business there, since they can't have the real things I guess...
