What is a good round to use in a 9mm with 3" barrel? No +p rounds
Been researching to see what hollow point that I want to use. I think that I might want to stay away from the +p rounds in the Kahr MP9. I think that obviously the non +p rounds will be easier to controll. I am a big .45 guy and this is my first 9mm so I thought I might see what some of you 9mm veterans shoot.
Thanks

Speer gold dot 124gr.

They are sweet. The come in +P too but I just buy the std pressure rounds and have been very happy.

I have heard good things about Remington Golden Sabers too but have not shot any myself.

I use my favorite which has always been the Federal 115 gr. JHP. Some call it the 9BP load because that is the number on the box. This was one of the best standard pressure loads before +P's and +P+'s became so popular. If you can find some, the Federal Nyclad 124 gr. lead hollowpoint is a good one also.

I don't like +P loads but I've heard a lot of good things about the Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. JHP+P.

Winchester 115 Gr Silvertip is one of the fastest non +p loads you can buy. Cheaper than many other premium hp's as well.

I've been using my G-A 115gr +P+ Gold Dots for so long, I've completely forgotten there's a non +P class of 9mm.
:D

If limited to standard pressure loads, I would personally go for Remington 124gr Golden Sabers. They were my first carry load in my K9 and offered surprising accuracy. The sharp edges from that expanded brass jacket were quite nasty.
From literature on this design, it has a comparatively low velocity threshold required for expansion.
The primary reason I switched to Speer Gold Dot was due to the jacket/core seperation I was encountering in my personal Playdough tests (thus initiating my search for a bonded jacket).

However, I believe Remington now offers the Golden Saber with a bonded jacket.

FWIW, I only use 230gr Golden Saber in my .45acp pistols and can find no vices (as far as premium ammunition is concerned).

It may be useful to see which grain weight your pistol fires ACCURATELY before buying a bunch of ammo...

My H&K USP9 works best with 147g. ammo. Any lighter than that and the target prints are 4" low at 25 yards.

9BP is the way to go.
124 Speer Gold Dot is a close second.
See which you find easy and accurate/repeatable to shoot.

I carry 115 Silvertips in my Glock 26. Pretty hot for a standard pressure load.

I've shot about 1000 rounds of Winchester Personal Protection 115 grain through my Kel-Tec P-11. It's easy to find at Wally World, and an easy feeding round that has never failed me once. I'm presently using Gold Dot 124 grain +p for carry, and it shoots comfortably, even out of the short barreled P-11.

Regards, Keys

I'm a big 9mm fan. I carry 115grns in my carry guns and shoot RN 124's in matchs. I usually carry 115+p+ rounds, but for standard rounds I like Hydra-Shok's and Gold Dots.

I like Golden Sabers....

I use the +P 127 gr in my P-11 with no problems.

At most any KC area gunshow there is an ammo dealer that wears a light, off white cowboy hat that has the best gold dot prices I've seen anywhere.

Most people I know simply know him as "the Cowboy that sells ammo really cheap". He often wears a blue denim shirt too. You can get 50rnds for about $9 a box. Or it may be $12 a box... need more caffiene. I think its 9 though.

I was playing around with the chronograph one day, testing some factory JHP rounds. I was actually getting Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. standard pressure slightly faster than Rem. Golden Sabre 124 gr. +P. I'm sure it would vary some from lot to lot, though. I think Remington specs for the 124 gr. +P are around 1180 fps. Some examples, all from same gun (Glock 17), same day:

Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. 1139 fps
Rem. Golden Sabre 124 gr. +P 1124 fps
Eldorado Starfire 124 gr. 1095 fps
Corbon 115 gr +P. 1325 fps
Win. Silvertip 115 gr. 1198 fps

I'm currently switching over to the Rangers. Up to now I have been faithfully served by the EFMJ's

If you are willing to buy on the internet you can find the Ranger LEO at reasonable prices.
