Defense ammo for 9mm

Like the others said, as long as it's from a good manufacturer and it feeds well, use it. My 9mm ammo is Winchester Ranger 124gr. Make sure that you put at least a box or two through the gun before you carry that ammo. Having to do a tap/rack/bang in a self defense situation because you never tested your carry ammo is a bad time to have to do something like that.

What kind of gun is it for? Some manufacturers talk specifically about higher pressure ammo.

In my Glocks I use for range Remington UMC 115 gr FMJ rounds. For CCW I use Speer Gold Dots 124 gr GDHP. I do find a little more of a kick from the Gold Dots than from the UMC rounds but not enough to want to change anything. I have used CCI rounds before. I prefer the brass to the aluminum.

Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ in my Glocks for CCW and HD. No need to worry about additional wear, I'm not shooting it for practice. Sure it gets shot to verify that it functions and for point of aim.

For practice, I use Miwall reloaded ammo. It's cheap and goes bang everytime, and it is actually pretty accurate too.

Barnes XPB 105 & 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP (53617)
Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP (53619)
Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)

These rounds are recommended by ballistics experts. There are probably more that would measure up but these were actually tested and many are in service with LE. the 124-127gr loads seem to be the highest rated. I wanted a bonded bullet for better barrier penetration and more reliable expansion in heavy clothing. The 124gr +P Speer or Black Hills Gold Dots seem to be where it's at. Winchester's Ranger RA9BA should be on par but I haven't seen it tested. I wouldn't worry about shooting +P or +P+ ammo unless you plan on plinking with it which could get mighty expensive...
