Hey guys this is my first post. ive been reading threads from this site for years and finaly joined...its got a whole lot of good information. Anyway i have a question regarding NYC and NYS Gun pruchasing. im a NYC resident (my drivers licence adress) and here you have to go through a whole bunch of communist crap to get a rifle...not to mention paying some really expensive fees. however i stay at my Grandparents house in in connecticut the summers and they have some land so i can shoot and stuff (there are no rifle laws in connecticut). so i want to get rifle to keep there (it wont go near NYC) but wil the NYC adress on my drivers licence affect my purchase? and what adress should i put on the 4473? the adress the gun will stay at or my contatct adress? im am not a Conecticut resident.

From what i know NYC laws obviously dont apply to the state so im thinking i can legaly purchase it out side the city and not bring it into the city and that would be legal. to put it more clearly im just wondering if the address thing will be an issue while purchasing....

No, your NYC address will not affect purchasing ability outside of NYC. In fact, you could buy the rifle from an FFL in about 42 states (probably actually more).

Thanks for the response guys. To kingpin008 yes I have done much research and I do understand that there are indeed laws in ct....however the laws I was referring to were about regestration and permits regarding rifles and shotguns. As far as I know a permit or registration is not necessary in the state of Connecticut for the ownership of rifles and shotguns. I'm sorry for not making that clear...I appreciate the concern and information.

I would suggest that one of your grandparents purchase the long gun in CT and allow you to shoot it when you visit. As I understand it, a FFL dealer can sell to you as long as you can legally own said weapon in your place of residence.

The FFL can sell a rifle to him if his STATE law would allow it. NYC ordinances would have nothing to do with the sale outside of NYC.

NavyLt is correct, you can buy or have transferred to you the ownership of any long gun in your state of residence so long as the state allows you such possession. NYC's disposition on the matter as far as ownership is not an issue. POSSESSION, however, is very much the issue in NYC. You may not posess the rifle or shotgun without the proper permits. Buy any long gun you want, in any state including NY, just don't bring them into the city!
Where you KEEP them, as long as it's not NYC, is of no business to NYC. Keep them at your parent's house in CT, it's perfectly legal. You can own or posess any long gun, as long as it's not an 'assault rifle' without any permit. Where in CT do your parents live? I'm in CT too, just about 40 minutes from NYC.

I have a friend that lives in NY (outside NYC) but purchased a shotgun in NYC recently. ...he took it home the same day.

I beleive you need a permit to keep and posses long guns in NYC, so NY gun dealers you may try to buy from will ask for your drivers license and that will likely be the start of some more interesting questions..... NYC gun laws are very restrictive.

As a NY resident, my friend tried to buy a gun recently in NC, SC, and MD and was politely told by dealers - NO. Apparently, NYS residents are OK to buy in Penn.

i think that you have to buy it in an adjacent state for it to be legal. for example connecticut, new jersey, pennsylvannia, vermont, massachusetts and new york is ok.

Hey, Joe! The adjacent state restriction went away in a 1986 amendment to the GCA of 1968.

Here's the story. NYS dealers are very weary of selling to NYC residents. In fact, most dealers will not do it because of the intimidation by the NYPD. Bloomberg had put some NYPD people on BATF task force and they look over the forms trying to fish out NYC residents that had purchased long guns outside of the city. I know a couple of people that had unpleasant visits from NYPD at their house demanding an explanation for the purchase and location of the rifle. They were told that the rifle is stored outside of the city limits and the detectives went away. I'm sure you don't want to get one of these visits.

Your best bet would be a face-to-face purchase and keeping the rifle with a friend outside of the 5 boroughs. Paperwork is your enemy in this case.

NavyLT is correct. My first firearms purchase as an adult (my name on the 4472) was in North Carolina ,1998, and I have never had a drivers license outside of Indiana. I was in the service at the time, but the only document I had to produce was my IN drivers license.
That would eliminate the contiguous state theory, as there is at least two states that you have to drive through to get from one to the other

well from the reaserch i have done it seems NavyLT has nailed it. i have indeed heard of the NYPD visiting people but they really cant do much except sound scary. no judge will issue a warrent due to lack of evidence. its obvious alot of people have a life outside on NYC. i dont think it should be a problem.
to Meta the house is north west in the town of Sharon. its about 2 hours out of the city.
i have thought of asking my grand parents to do it for me but that ida bothers me. im an american and its my right. i will own a firearm in my name.

From the people that got "visited", the detectives do not have a warrant. It's pretty obvious that no judge will sign that. They, however, ask to come in and "look around". Once you've consented, they don't need a warrant any more. So do not let them into the house.

Of course, the farther away from the city you go, the less likely that something like this will happen. But I can pretty much guarantee that no shop in Long Island will sell you a rifle. In fact, last time I visited the Coliseum Gun Traders, they had a sign on the door saying "no sales to NYC residents".

Good luck and be safe exercising your rights.
