Can I cut down a Walther P22 Barrel ??

So, here's the deal: My 11 and 14 year old daughters shoot. Usually whatever I have and bring to the range like my model 36 S&W revolver or my Kel-Tec P32. They don't like shooting my Ruger SR9c so much. I rented a Walther P22 at my local range and they loved it. Eventually a used one showed up for sale locally and I jumped on it but...it's not the 3.4 inch barrel that we all liked, it's the 5 inch target barrel with the comp. on the front of the slide. We don't like the added length and want the shorter length barrel. I don't want to spend $130 on the shorter barrel from Walther. I tried posting here and on other forums in the "classified" section to see if someone wanted to trade barrels, but no answers so... I'm thinking of taking the gun to my locak gunsmith and having my barrel cut and crowned. The question is...can I do that? The stock barrels have a threaded end and a thread protector. Do I really need that? Last chance, if someone wants to trade, email me at [email protected] , otherwise, I need advice on the cut and crown.

I think it would end up being more costly than getting the conversion to have it work and be durable. The barrel is sleeved and all held together with that nut on the front, take it off and see for yourself.

With the low cost of a p22, I wouldn't do any extensive modifications, you're likely better off just replacing or getting the conversion.

I suppose you could just run without the (worthless) front weight, at least you'd get out of the un-wanted steps in stripping and cleaning. I ended up getting a repair kit from WaltherUSA / S&W for a weight that wouldn't stay put, they threw in a short barrel conversion kit for free and I've never put the worthless "target" kit on since.

I'd double check, but I think you can probably trade someone for it.

I picked up the 3.4 and wished I went the other route (reverse!).

I'm not home now, but I'd guess it's a simple swap with the threaded barrel and all. Since I know I can grab the larger barrel as an option and I think it's identical to the new, outta the box 5 inch model.

Does a shorter barrel really matter? I have a 5" P22, and it's a great shooter. LOTS of FUN for all.

This is just a range gun plinker right? Really strange you'd go through this much effort to shorten the barrel....but anyway, no, you can't have it cut down unless you are going to have them thread it and make a matching sleeve for it. We are talking about a $300 gun here, you'd be looking at a substantial cost to modify such an inexpensive gun.

I agree, having the barrel cut, the sleeve cut, and barrel threaded and crowned...I might as well buy a new barrel kit. I'd much rather find someone with a 3.4 inch barrel that wants to trade for my 5.0 incher.
