OK well I have a friend who is 20, and I am wanting to give him a old .38 that I have laying around, and I am wondering if I can, and what I need to do so he can legally own/Have it.

the state i am from is Oklahoma.

In Arizona you can. OK has similar laws I think, so you should be good.

I'm no lawyer though.

EDIT: As per this, it looks like you're all good. Give it to him (assuming he's not a prohibited possessor).

He isn't prohibited from receiving it due to age. Provided that he is not prohibited from possessing for any other reason you can legally furnish him the revolver.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but is this the same way in any other states? I've always wondered about the legality of a father giving his son a rifle at 14 versus giving him a pistol at 18 or 20. If it's a rifle, nobody cares, but it always seemed to me that i it were done with a pistol it was illegal.

Interesting how pretty much anything that comes after the word "but" directly contradicts what came before it. :D:neener:

You'd have to look it up on a state by state basis. I usually start here...

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/

...then proceed to the website of the given state's legislature.

In ohio, it is unlawful to provide or sell a handgun to anyone under 21, and they are not permitted to possess one unless it is during legitimate educational or sporting purpose. So I can provide one to someone under 21 to teach them or for plinking (while I'm there supervising), but I cannot give one to them for protection in their home.

A lot of states have similar conditional laws like this, which, if I'm not mistaken, are simply a legible version of the federal law.

I would go to a trusted gun dealer and ask. Our knowledge of laws in your state are certainly equal to or less than yours. I trust internet advice borne from experience, how does this gun shoot?, etc., but not the legal kind.

In PA you can only give one to an 18-21 year old if its your son/daughter.

In SC any under 21 yr old caught with a weapon in their car (and no "adult supervision") is in some serious legal trouble.

Guys, it doesn't matter what other state laws say. It matters what the poster's state law says. Per both the Brady site and the NRA list of gun laws, you are fine to do so, AS LONG AS your friend is also a resident of your state. This is true of OK, there are others, but make no assumption about other states, look it up.

A person under age 18 may not possess a handgun or handgun ammunition, and it is illegal for a person to provide a handgun or handgun ammunition to a person under age 18, except for target shooting, hunting, or certain other exempted purposes. (Youth Handgun Safety Act, 1994)
