Have been having some fun lately shooting cans of water at 100yds. Spent just a minute or two making some loops out of twine, and hung them from the target rails by the tabs. Have had a ball nailing them at 100yds with a CZ mini-Mauser! The shredding of the aluminum is quite impressive, usually with left or right side completely blown out. Interesting to note it is almost impossible to distinguish entry from exit. Part of this post should be directed at the Barnaul ammo which really shined in 7.62x39 and in my pump .308...
The CZ and a Nikon 4x puts 'em right on the crosshairs at 100yds; so the 12oz cans are fairly easy to hit, but good fundamentals are needed.
I had to make some adjustments to the Remington 760 using the .308 Federal 150-gr SP's I thought I had sighted it in with, but having few of those along I had to switch twice. Both the Barnaul Bear Silver softpoints and Brown fmj's responded with consistency after a test shot and a tick or three's adjustment on a rudimentary scope (Bushnell Sharpshooter 3-9x). I was able to hit a 12oz can with an fmj, but the impact of a Silver softpoint on a 24-oz can full of water was tremendous! There was nothing left of it that could be discerned from the bench. The piece that was large enough to see launched over the berm out of sight.
I prefer to see it as more childlike than childish, but I just love plinking, which takes on an entirely new dimension in 7.62!
My collecting and marksmanship efforts may just be satisfied with seeing how many cool things I can get to hit cans of water at 100yds. Well, someday maybe 200...
