I follow all safety rules (as have been mentioned) everytime a firearm comes into my hands. This includes frequent chamber checks, as a way of not only being safe in the moment, but ingraining this behavior into muscle memory thus perpetuating safe handling.

The chamber and magazine check is a habit of safe gun handling. Most of the time you already know the condition of the fire arm. Sometimes you THINK you know. Not only will I check a gun that someone else has handled, I'll check a gun if I've changed tasks since I last checked it.

The habit is more than mall ninja window dressing. I am training ME as well as verifying the condition of the gun. Please develop the habit for yourself.

I think of "safety check" more in terms of making sure the firearm is in good working order so it will not fire due to a mechanical malfunction.

I think they are referring to this. In the Navy its called a "Function and Safety Check." It's a 30 second, weapon specific drill to make sure everything is working correctly, and is supposed to be done every time the weapon is issued or turned in.

I think they do it at the beginning of the videos because if they do not they will get many comments from people saying they should have. It also is good for people who may watch the videos that are not experienced with firearms. They may not even know how to check if it is loaded or not.

Lots of good points in this thread...especially yours Crasen. There are many who are not as familiar with all the basic safety rules of gunhandling. And then there are those who know nothing at all. I think it falls upon us as responsible gun owners to educate whenever possible, even those who are just curious and will never own or fire a firearm...this helps counteract the ignorance that is promulgated by any media source which is not friendly to our hobby/lifestyle.
