Hello guys. I'm new to shooting and handguns and I have decided to start thinking about purchasing a new handgun. My sights are most definately set on a Taurus PT145 .45ACP. My friend says it is a good gun because there isn't a magazine disconnect, so even if the magazine were to somehow not be in the gun, I could still load and shoot the gun by chambering it myself. He also says that it is low priced, light-wieght, has a light pull back trigger, high magazine capacity, and is chambered in a high caliber round. He loads up with Winchester 230 grain SXT rounds in his. Its a beautiful gun as well. Any suggestions on whether or not my decision may be good or not? Feedback will be appreciated.

From what I've read, the Taurus has a nice little following and serves as a nice option in a first gun
Welcome to THR! See you on the boards :D

This gun has gotten alot of good reviews. I (and others on this board) have had mixed results with Taurus quality. It seems that they alternate between being a first-class operation and a low-class one. I suspect they do a good job 90% of the time, but that's just my guess. My advice: Buy the gun, but test it thouroughly before you rely on it as a defensive weapon. You'll probably be pleased with it.
Good luck,

David

One thing you don't want to do is load a round in the chamber by hand. It can damage the gun. The magazine disconnect being absent will allow you to fire the gun if the magazine has be ejected by mistake or you're in the process of reloading during a shooting and you are able to shoot that round in the chamber even though the magazine is out. I thought the PT145 triggers were DAO which aren't going to be light but are perfect for self defense carry IMO. I was actually looking at buying one, too but went with a snubby. Here is an excellent review of it.

Also, don't forget to purchase a good holster for it and a REAL gun belt. Those 2 items will make the difference between carrying the gun and leaving it at home.

Good luck,
+1 great advice and to expand on that, be sure you test, all the different sd/hd rds you plan to carry, make sure that there is not a shadow of a doubt if they will work or not.

Look at a Ruger P97 too- has all the qualities you like in a Taurus (except maybe looks) and Ruger builds them right and stands behind them.

Go for it. What do you plan to use it for?

If you're mostly going to be shooting for fun, you'll also be able to use less expensive ammo at the range.
Its a beautiful gun as well.
You don't need any other reason. :)

You might type Taurus PT145 into the search function at the top of this page to read what more folks have written. Lots of people like Taurus pistols; I have a co-worker who raves about how much he likes his new Taurus revolver, too.

Have fun with it. Be sure to give us a range report.

thanks for the feedback gentlemen and/or women. i plan to use it as CC and home D. to be honest however, the real reason is that the price for that kind of gun is a steal! under 450$ for a .45 cal handgun = :p

The newer PT-145's have a SA trigger and they have supposedly worked out the problems that they had with the older models.
Around here they go for under $350 NIB and carry 10+1 rounds of 45 acp, not a bad deal if the quality has improved.
