Can we make a list of manufacturers that DON'T add silly extra "safety" devices?

Things like magazine disconnectors and built in key locks? Or at least have the option of buying without said devices?

To my uncertain knowledge new Ruger revolvers and rifles don't have any. In general AR-15s, AKs, etc. don't have them, although some of the new military types like some of the FN rifles MIGHT. Glocks and SIGs don't have them AFAIK.

OTOH S&W and Taurus have them. Ruger Mk III pistols have them. Remington puts them on the M700, at least the ones that are intended for "civilians", but I don't know about the models that are intended for police.

Browning HiPowers have had them almost forever.

Firing pin blocks and grip safeties on M1911s might fit on this list.

What guns do you know of that have these things? A lot of gun ads and even articles in magazines don't mention this stuff but it seems important to me.

FP safties yes, grip safeties no.

JMB added the GS at the request of the Army. It was on the 1911 when the Army adopted it as the standard sidearm in 1911. If the Army didnt request it, it may have been called the 1910 (I dont know what was added when).

Springfield doesn't have magazine disconnects or key locks on their pistols.

However, to my displeasure, SA is adding a thumb safety to their XD line. That's silly in my opinion.

With S&W M&P pistols (semi-autos only) you have the option of buying with or without integrated locks and magazine disconnect safeties. The Ruger SR9 has a mag disconnect safety but it's easily removed with instructions in the manual.

Their 1911s have a key lock in the MSH that will lock the hammer in the forward position.

It didnt bother me with my milspec, it came with an arched MSH and I prefer a flat one.

Didnt hear about them adding a thumb safety to the XDs. I mainly shoot 1911s so I swipe it anyway, even on my glock...

If I remember correctly, Springfield DOES put keylocks on their M1911s. However, [unlike S&W's] they don't lock by themselves and are easily removed by replacing the mainspring housing.

Ruger New Vaqueros DO have key locks, but they're very smartly hidden inside the grip panels.

NAA Guardians give you the option of buying their regular model sans lock, or a California model with a lock.

Yep, they do. The darn thing is so innocuous, most people do not even realize it is there.

That isn't entirely true. SA is offering a thumb safety of specific 45 models. They are not adding the thumb safety to all of their line. It is an option on a specific model.

I'll take the (Colt) firing pin safety. It has valid uses and doesnt interfere with anything.

As far as the grip safety, I'd be sure to check its function on a regular basis, if your counting on it. I've had a couple 1911's, my Kimber was the last, whose grip safety did not work. In the case of the Kimber, it required replacement of the part altogether.

I always used my grip safety during a thumb in the trigger guard press check. Not that its really an issue, but it does take one more thing out of the loop.

As was mentioned, they do, and its something best removed. If you do use them, mind that cheap little key, its easily broken if turned the wrong way, and then your really SOL, especially if the little tit stays in the hole.

This is one of the reasons I switched to SIG's. The come with what you need and dont add silliness you dont. Point and bang, bang, bang, bang interface, what more could you ask for? :)

Browning and FN both seem to love mag disconnects. While on the 5.7 USG I can understand (marketing a pistol to police, it's a good feature), the first thing I do to a newly purchased Buckmark .22 pistol is remove the disconnect.

Navy Arms (Uberti) SAA Clones only have an extra long cylinder pin, with a second notch on the pin that keeps the hammer from contacting the Original-style Firing pin when it's pushed all the way in, otherwise it's about as close as you can come to an original, other than USFA, easily switched out for a standard Colt model IIRC. I think most of the other Uberti importers have the same system..ONLY way they can sell their wares in some states.

Things like magazine disconnectors...

Guess it's a case of one man's junk being another man's treasure, is it not?
I kinda like thumb safeties myself-been planning on buying an XD 45 Compact and will probably hold off 'til I see if the thumb safety is an option. Got an XD 40 SC and wouldn't mind one bit if it had a thumb safety...

AFA magazine disconnectors, I've read of quite a few cases where LEOs have ended up in a fight with a BG over their weapon, and when they could not maintain control of their weapon, they managed to eject the magazine, let the BG have it, separate and draw their backup and fire (while the BG can't figure out why the LEO's gun won't fire). If I'm not mistaken, there were some departments that trained their officers to do just that in case they should ever find themselves in a (draw/losing) struggle over their weapon.
'Course, this may not apply to a non-LEO, but ya never know when you might be in a fight over your weapon?

There are two sides to every coin donchaknow!

As far as I know, Remington no longer does. They discontinued the J-lock cross-bolt safety on their 870's last year, and I don't think any of their other guns had it on them.
