Since SomeKid's thread got hijacked into verbotenland, let's discuss Nebraska's own Ernie Chambers and his virulent opposition to CCW in our Unicameral.

Do a search and read up on this character. He's been in our Unicameral (Nebraska is the only state with only 1 legislative body) for 30+ yrs and is term limited out of office in '08.

His antics are legion, and I've never heard of anyone like him in any legislative body. Even James Trafficant pales in comparison..no pun intended. Also, Ernie isn't a crook as far as we know.

He was the first and only Black member of our Unicameral for decades...I think there is another Black Senator now. Ernie represents a predominently Black district in NE Omaha. He owns a barbershop. Ernie always wears short sleeved sweatshirts and jeans into the Unicameral. He used to be the bane of the State Patrol as he would drive from Omaha to Lincoln at excessive speed and then verbally abuse troopers when pulled over because he was imune to arrest while the Unicameral was in session.

Ernie routinely blathers on for hours on any and all topics being considered by the Unicameral. He is anti everything. He is verbally abusive to other Senators and has threatened them many times. He is an impediment to the people's business in our legislature. He takes ridiculous and arcane positions on everything in opposition to the status quo. He's not an anarchist, he's just a mouthy troublemaker.

Being a State Senator in Nebraska is a part time endeavor and pays $12K/yr. The Unicameral meets in one 60 day session and one 45 day session annually. Most of the other Senators are amatuer politicians, and ill prepared for Ernie's "In your face" tactics. That's how he's managed to bully 48 other Senators for over 30 yrs.

Why is he doing everything he can to derail CCW in Nebraska (AGAIN!)? Simple, because the white folks WANT it

Fortunately, this year enough of our Senators stood up on their hind legs and voted to cloture Ernie's filibuster IN THE FIRST ROUND OF ACTION. Ernie is incensed and vows to grind the whole legislative session to a halt in order to prevent passage of LB 454. The bill still has to make it past amendments, then a "Select File" debate/vote, then a final content vote. Our governer has said he will sign it into law.

BTW, my intent is not to denegrate anyone because of race. I'm simply giving my take on the dynamics of the situation. Ernie plays the race card so often, he must have a boxcar full of 'em stashed somewhere near the Capitol Building.

Has anyone told him that black folks could use shall-issue CCW permits to arm themselves more effectively against white racists?

I might be going out on a limb here, but I think that one of Ernie's objections to CCW permits is that a disproportionate number of his constituents might have problems making it past the background check.

My grandparents lived in that part of town, and I drove a school bus doing court ordered desegration from the projects in North Omaha so I have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about. That part of town has all of the characteristics of "Inner City" that one would encounter in any major US City.

I'd guess he's more afraid a disproportionate number of his constituents will get shot. The residents of St. Louis openly admitted that was why they held up Missouri's CCW and shall issue bills so long.

Moon, you got the idea of my thread. Ernie is a nutjob. I never knew he was black. Having family in Omaha, I made an assumption, turns out NE does have colored folk as well. Guess they are just like the Fords we have here in TN.

Glad you term-limited him, I bet he cried over it.
