What would you choose, given $300 (add extra for tax, background check) if you were going to buy a revolver?

Here are some desired features -

caliber .357 or above
prefer double/single action over SA only
stainless preferred (not required)
Adjustable rear easy to aquire sites (no goove and blade)
A reputation for quality by MFG. (Rossi is bad, right?)
3 - 6 inch barrel (mostly for plinking - but MIGHT be used for hunting)
Grip for smaller hand

NOTE: This weapon would NOT be used for concealed carry.

Is this possible or am I going to have to go to a used gun?

Thanks for your input.....

I've owned Rossis, 6 revolvers. They were all quite acceptable, very shootable, good accuracy. No, they're not fit and finished nor do they have quite the level of trigger in DA (though all had great SA triggers) mode, but that's why Rugers and Smiths cost more. Compromise and get that quality with a Taurus. I have three Taurus revolvers which are superbly accurate, great triggers, and very nicely fit and finished. I have a M66 Taurus 4" nickel I wouldn't trade for five M19s as a shooter. Oh, yeah, I'd make the trade for the money, but it's the best shootin' .357 magnum medium frame gun I've ever owned. I've had a M19, a Security Six, and a Rossi 971. This gun, used, set me back $197+ Tax. One of the better gun deals I've made in my life. I ain't gettin' rid of it for nothin', no thanks!

Have not checked the price on them lately, but the Taurus 627 or Taurus 66 sound just like what you want.

Either a good used Ruger Speed or Security Six or a Smith and Wesson 65 66 681 686 would be what I would look for at such places as www.auctionarms.com www.gunsamerica.com www.gunbroker.com be patient and shop around and try a few out through friends or renting them first at a range and see what fits you the best.
Many of the Smith & Wesson's turn up for decent prices used as police trade ins some having been used little if at all when departments switched to semi autos.
Also check out a copy of Shotgun News and The Gun List J&G and Southern Ohio Gun always have a few trades ins.
Good luck on your search. :D

Used GP-100, Security six, Model 19, Model 66, Model 5/686. All will be around $300 if you shop around. The Smiths will be hardest to get for that right now.

I do not have experience with Taurus revolvers, but have seen some really nice looking ones at shows reasonablely priced.

Rossi and Taurus are the same company now and they produce very acceptale revolvers that will last.

McGunner has it right. There's also these to consider.

While I agree that the Ruger GP100 makes sense there is another alternative. That's what the links area about.

There are good reasons to go with Taurus. That's what the links area about.
Rossi makes the 971 and Taurus has the 65,66 and Tracker series for consideration.
Since what I was going to say is somewhere in the links I will let them do the"talking".

I'd go with a used Ruger. See if you can find a DA .44 mag. You can shoot .44 special for SD and magnum for hunting. Never under or over gunned.

Ruger is always a solid choice, and the newer Taurii are good bets as well.

Rossi has improved drastically over the years. In the mid-90's, I had a Rossi snubnose that would knock itself out of time with a few +P rounds, but I see plenty of newer ones at the range, and they all run fine.

I think it is worth waiting and saving more money and get a more expensive, more reliable revolver. Down the line you will be glad you did. You will also need to save money for ammo (not cheap), cleaning supplies, range lane time, gear bag, ear and eye protection - not to mention the next revolver you buy once you get hooked.

Start saving!

I suggest a good used Ruger .357. I have seen a stainless either security or speed six w/a 6inch barrel for $265 in Southern Cal. so anywhere else s/b less.

I picked up a Dan Wesson with a 6 inch barrel for $250 its in that shiney black that Dan Wesson used,,,I'd say easy 90% condition.

Most .357's haven't been shot much - more wear on the outside than inside usually.
