Good shooting but reasonably priced .22 revolvers?

22 revolvers

In the $400 price range you are limited somewhat in a double action 22 revolver except for the Taurus 94 and the Charter arms pathfinder. If you could step it up to $450-$500, then you could be looking at a nice used S&W model 18 or possible a K22. They are out there ,but you need to be patient and judicious in your search. I bought a beautiful S&W model 18 about a year ago for $475.00 If you have to have a 22 now, then by all means buy the wonderful Ruger single six, a fantastic little 22 revolver and much fun to shoot.Good luck with you search and above all good shooting too. Sincerely, Snooperman

I vote for the Taurus 94 in SS I have had a 4 inch for about 10 years it has been a delight to shoot and to carry as a trail gun. I liked it so much that when I got a chance to get one with a 5 inch barrel last year I picked it up also.

Had a Taurus 94, purchased new in 1990, that performed quite well when I had it. I let my wife take it with her when we divorced in 1996, as it was the only gun we had she'd shoot.

Ruger

Great gun. The .22 cylinder shoots fine. For small game or if accuracy really matters to you, shoot the Win Mag cylinder. It really makes a difference.

Heritage Rough Rider

Another vote for heritage if you can go without plinking with a ultra customized hierloom weapon, one with intricate scroll work and a $200 holster.

I bought a little H & R 922 a few months back. Shot a jackrabbit with it a few days ago. It seems fairly reliable to me. I would like to have a Smith & Wesson.

Affordable and reliable? I'll vote H&R every time.

I prefer DA shooting and, aside from their many 9 shot .22LR models, H&R made .22LR/.22WMR convertible DA six shooters like the 676. I have one with a 7.5" barrel and it's quite a tack driver.

+1 to the H&R suggestion. Don't overlook the NEF line of revolvers either. NEF R92/R73 and Ultra's are H&R design's made in the late 80's/early 90's.

Anybody have any experience/opinions of an Iver Johnson 55 Target. I know where I could buy one cheap.

You should be able to find good used a S&W 617 reasonably priced. S&W has made some nice K frame .22 revolvers.

Within your price constraints my choices would be a used S&W M17 or M18 for a DA revolver or a Ruger Single-Six for a SA revolver.

If you can find a used S&W M617 within your price range that would be a good DA revolver too.

kilogulf59,
In post #23 you are using MY picture of a H&R M949, why are you doing so without telling everyone it's not your picture. I don't appreciate you using a picture I took of my revolver without asking. You didn't even bother to change the name of the picture. I would appreciate it if you would either remove the picture from your picture server and stop showing it as your own or post a note telling everyone it's a picture of my revolver and not your picture.

If anyone doubts what I'm saying just check this thread from March of 2008 where I posted about that revolver, all 3 pictures are in that thread. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=345461 As a matter of fact, most of the pictures of my guns are on that carpet which is in my computer room.

sometimes you can find a decent deal on a Colt Officers match 22 DA revolver. They are old but good shooters and can usually be found for around 500

Colt trooper 22s are a good value still too.

Oh. 500 IS what you're calling a decent deal.:)

When I read the first sentence, I was going to fly to Kentucky.:D

I guess I think its a good deal....not cheap enough for me still though.

You know Colts........

Eh??

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad price at all, for what it is.

I'm saying that, if you were seeing them for 300 bucks, I'd be on the way there right now.:D

I strongly suggest saving some more $$ and finding a used S&W K-frame .22LR. A Model 18 (4") or a 17 (6") or 617 (4" or 6" in stainless) is well worth the time, effort and money in the long run.
I agree. I'll also add my opinion that a Model 17 is much more desireable than a 617.

ArchAngelCD: it's really none of my business, but my free advice is not to worry about kilogulf59's borrowing of your photo. He didn't claim that he took the photo, or that it was of his specific gun ... he just wanted to show an example of what his revolver looks like.

Presumably he would have posted his own photo if he weren't lazy and/or technologically inept (that's why I sometimes include photos of other people's firearms in my own posts).

Rest assured that no one thinks any more of him, or any less of you, because of his post.

Just my two cents, please ignore it if you wish.

P.S. If you are really sensitive to this sort of thing, I respectfully suggest that you avoid posting any more photos on the Internet, which makes them extremely vulnerable to being copied without your knowledge or consent. Rightly or wrongly, once the toothpaste is out of the tube it is almost impossible to get it back in ...

A pic of MY 949. Great revolvers.
Also, anyone who wants to can post pics of it all over the internet, even claim it as thier own if they wish!! I don't care, I know where it sleeps at night and that's all that really matters. LOL

A few more excellent H&R's for people to consider. I personally love them all.

Play nice now guys!

Wow, I did nothing wrong but I'm the one who gets all the free advice and even some ribbing. That's fine, I expect nothing less in today's society. :banghead:

I do appreciate the advice though, the ribbing, not so much... :p

ArchAngel,
Sorry, Sometimes, well, most of the time, I can't resist being kind of a smart azz. I guess I see your point of not liking someone stealing your pic. I just figure a guy has to grow thick skin if he is going to release info in the net.
I look at it a little differently, I look at is as a compliment to my gun or to my photographic skills, that some one wants to use it in thier post.
once again, sorry, don't mean to tick people off, just have a little fun!
Jim

I agree. I'll also add my opinion that a Model 17 is much more desireable than a 617.

Oh Reid 73, I should mention I agree whole-heartedly with you RE: the 17 vs. 617. I also find the K-frame .38s and .357s to be more desirable than the L-frame .357s.

I should mention, I took some heat on another board suggesting the 617 would be great with a light-contour barrel and a half-lug. Somebody suggested it is a trainer for a service gung (IE 686), and I put up my Model 18 and 4" Model 19 .357 as a matched set.
