Robber blows off own arm with shotgun
By 24 hours news services
A Toronto-area man who blew his left arm off with a shotgun while robbing a pizza man has been ordered to lecture students on the dangers of crime - once he's out of jail.
Anthony Beckles, 20, lost his arm when a sawed-off shotgun he was using to club a pizza delivery man went off on March 23, 2003.
Beckles was out on bail on a drug charge when he committed the robbery. He is currently serving 40 months in jail for the armed robbery and has another 90 days left in his sentence.
"Losing a limb after all this is not something he had anticipated," the man's lawyer said.
Beckles has said in documents filed with the court he wants to work with youth to divert them from a life of crime.
The Crown lawyer told the judge that doing 240 hours of commmunity service giving lectures at local schools would be a fitting sentence in addition to his house arrest.
