I realize that the incident happened in La., not Utah, but if it occurred here the law states that the immediate flight after committing a robbery is considered to be "in the course of committing a theft" and an appropriate level of force, including deadly force, is justified to prevent the commission of a forcible felony. A similier occurance in N.Ca. a guy was flashing some high school girls and a bunch of them poured a can of "Whup-Ass" on him!

if you have reason to believe that a fleeing scumbag is leaving with the probable purpose of doing more harm to someone else, you can whack him something serious.

Yeah, but here is the bloody rub.

He was no longer threatening them. Once he turned to go, he was no longer attacking them and they were no longer in danger. When they tripped and attacked him, he was in fact the victim of assault with a deadly weapon or weapons.

No problem. The perp had just committed a violent felony, and represented a continuing danger to the community and law enforcement if allowed to remain at large. The victims saw an opertunity to effect a "citizen's arrest", which allows them to use "resonable force" to detain the individual. Since the "arresting citizens" have no way to know if the bad guy has a back-up gun or not, and are not armed (per se) themselves OR have LE training, a great degree of latitude must be given them in the area of using force. Problem solved.
