What is going on with the attempt to abolish the long gun registry in Canada?

A bill to abolish it has been introduced in Parliament (again), but since the party that wants to abolish it has a minority, it won't pass under the current government (the LIEberals, the NDP, and the Bloc Quebecois all LOVE the registry, and won't vote to kill it). It's likely that another election will be held before it even comes up for a vote, but unless we can get a majority Conservative government, it's going to stay for the foreseeable future. Several provinces also say that they're not going to charge anyone who has an unregistered non-restricted long-arm. If and when it IS scrapped, it also wouldn't change the status of any restricted or prohibited firearms in Canada, including the below list: (these are prohibited, and can't be owned in Canada unless you had them before the cut-off date, and even if you DO own them legally, they won't issue you a permit to take them to a range to shoot them)

I find it so hard to believe that when the opposers are shown the freakin facts about how much money the system costs, how it doesn't stop crime, and how inconvienient it is they still want it in effect. Bunch of BS, its pretty common knowledge among the public that the registry is a waste of money, how can it still be used?

There were a number of groups that wanted to do exactly that, but the LIEberals that passed this BS knew that they'd be setting themselves up for a huge suit and monetary settlement if the law was outright confiscatory (apparently, they see some sort of moral difference between stealing your property outright, and merely saying "we're going to let you KEEP it, we're just not going to let you USE it"). Here, a Hakim is OK (as is a Garand, or an FN-49, or an SKS, etc.), but it has to have its magazine blocked to 5 rounds or less (Garand is allowed 8, because they couldn't figure out a way to make the clip system restricted to 5 rounds). An M1 Carbine is also allowed, but it has to have a non-standard barrel over 470mm / 18 1/2", or else it's considered "restricted", and is treated the same as a handgun. They arrived at the above list by flipping through a bunch of Gun Digests and circling everything that made them go "Ewww", then figuring out what was common to those firearms, and building a "points list" to decide what Canadians could and couldn't be trusted with.
