hey everybody, so im looking to pick up a new handgun but im havin trouble deciding which one to get. my choices are between a smith and wesson model 438 and a browning hi power mk III. now i know they are different from eachother in many ways. but i love them both i cant choose. ive got a pretty old model 36 and love the snub nose, looking for something a bit newer like the 438 its beautiful, and suuper light. on the other hand i kinda want something different like an autoloader. what do yall think? i need your help!!!

I would go with the Autoloader for variety. You have good taste in firearms though...

get the Hi Power in this instance.

What are you going to use this firearm for ?

If your looking for a good range gun, I would highly recommend the High Power. I have a MkIII and it is a very fun range gun. It is accurate, low recoil, and very comfortable to shoot.

A carry gun will depend more on your personal preferences/situation/environment and what your use to. The 438 would make a more carry friendly gun.

For an "all around" use pistol...the Hi Power would get my vote. It works well as a range gun, plinker, carry, and home defense.

I would buy the pistol that may not be available (or less available) in the future.

I'm with Zeke, if it is from a retailer buy the one and put the other in layaway. That is what I recently did with a Sig P238 and a Kahr P9. Got them both out finally and rotate carrying one or the other.

Ever since I've had all my bases covered this is how I make these choices:

I set them side by side.
Then I hold each of them until one feels better than the other.
Then I buy it.

I can't deal with it?! I agonize over the purchase for weeks on end, comparing endless opinions and data over and over. Then by the time I make my mind up, something new steals my affection. Wash, rinse and repeat. That is why I still don't have the weapon I set out to buy 7 years ago...in spite of numerous purchases since then. :banghead:

Hello friends and neighbors // If one hasn't risen to the top yet and you have dry fired both for fit feel and trigger pull...
Yep, get em both.

Try to set up a better bargin by buying two at a time. Even if one is on layaway it gives you more purchasing power. Try offering to buy the more expensive one first ..cash.

The pawn shops are good places for this type of discount. I'm usually buying one Excellent/very nice and one good/fair condition firearm. the PS usually needs less for them then the Gun Store but every buisness/owner is different around here.

However, "everyone" likes to move merchandise as fast as possible.

Good luck with the purchase.

If one gun has limited availability, get it when you can.
If not, wait until you can get both.

haha, well truth is i was always gonna get them both :p

i just cant decide which one to get first. The shops in my area no longer have either of these guns but said they could order them for me, which i checked would be cheaper than buying one online then sending it over to the store..

I totally wish i could buy them both at the same time, but state law only allows one handgun for every 30 days? something like that.. so im not sure i can even put one on layaway and buy the other..

anyways i think im gonna go with the hi power first :D

thanks everybody,

Go with the Hi-Power first, as you've already got a S&W snubbie. I think you'll be very pleased with the ergonomics and functionality of the Hi-Power. Enjoy.

Try to figure out which gun you would plan on using the most, and which one has a high availability rate. But in all honesty, the Browning High Power is by far my favorite pistol and I would never part with it, its accurate and inexpensive to shoot, and is always going to increase in value.

BHP is going to be a more enjoyable range toy then the 438, but the 438 will be better to carry. So I guess it just depends on what you plan on doing.

Well, usually I buy both and sell the one I don't like. :)

Okay, let's get serious. If you have a steel snub and shoot it well, buying an alloy snub for a carry gun is a reasonable plan...but do not neglect the fact that the two are different critters and you will have to shoot the alloy one frequently enough to maintain competency. It will not be fun. Practice with the more pleasant steel frame revolver is a supplement, not a substitute.

If it were me, I would buy a pre-lock 342 (or buy a 340 and remove the lock parts...easy to do) Lighter and about the same price when you get done. Plus you have the option of running .357s through the 340 if your paws are up to it (mine are not).

If you are stuck on the flush hammer, okay, but IMHO the ability to shoot a j-frame SA is of extremely limited value in the real world.

The BHP is a whole other discussion, and I won't even go down that road.
