Canton Ohio PD has drawn a lot of attention after their now well publicized video of a police officer mishandling a CCW traffic stop.

The City Council President of Canton OH made a statement recently. Instead of addressing the police issues he attacks CCW in general and basically blames the people who are complaining for the problems.

Schulman is a known "Guns are for the elite" type from way back.

I wouldnt live in Ohio if you paid me a Billion Dollars, I have traveled through there 3 times, and ecach time was a nightmare.......it's a Police state, and they get what they deserved....

That councilman sickens me. His argument against CCW (high crime, bad areas, etc) is one of the very reasons CCW is so important. Sounds like he needs some more outraged out of town calls.

Whats oddly ironic is that he is compelled to speak out about "carrying weapons in the worst of conditions". In my mind, the poorer my conditions, the more necessary protection is. If everyone lived in crime free "Mayberry" type places, people might not have as strong of a need (but still the RIGHT, of course) to be armed. However, he speaks of "drug and crime ridden neighborhoods at 1:30 AM"......is there a better place TO carry? I darn sure wouldn't want to depend on the officer in the video for my safety. but I shouldn't have the option of taking my personal security into my own hands? Too, he speaks of how the sorts of incidents involving the Canton officer will increase if the public is allowed to go armed, almost excusing the officer's behavior, blaming the law rather than its enforcement for the problems. Heres a newsflash buddy....with varying degrees of success, departments nationwide have handled the issue of concealed carry fairly well. The officer's complete lack of regard for the law and his belligerent, degrading approach to dealing the public is far more of a danger to the public at large than the average concealed carrier, as such a reaction could provoke a counterreaction by someone who felt threatened by his actions. When a cop tells a citizen....who has broken no laws...that he "should have emptied his Glock into him" while screaming in a handcuffed person's face.....the issue IS NOT concealed carry, but officer conduct. The reason the Canton council has recieved so many calls is not becasue of the ccw laws there, but because of this outlandish behavior that seems to be being almost excused by a member of the city council. Absurd doesn't begin to cover his statement

Seeing that Canton is my hometown; I believe I will be making a few calls tomorrow simply to voice my concerns.

It's a real simple issue of economics. Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It can safely be assumed a lot of "out of towners" come to Canton to at least visit the Hall of Fame. What else is there worth visiting Canton? I don't know and mean no slight. Anyone else want to chime in here recommending other sights to see in Canton, by all means chime in. So Mr. Schulman, us out of towners are not going to get mad. In fact, we'll be civil and take the high road BUT we will stay away. When the tourism dollars and tax revenues tank, maybe then you will get the message. In the meantime, you have a problem with at least one jackbooted thug with a badge. Ya might give it some serious thought about putting your energies to see if you have a few more brownshirts in your PD rather than dis us out of towners who are at times tourists. Mr. Schulman, with all due respect, do YOU have any questions?

Crosswire3, thank you! You live in Canton and I think that this is a problem for Canton to resolve. But if Mr. Schulman wants to tickle the tail of the (tourist dollar) dragon. It's his call and the consequences are his. Good luck!

I'm hoping to see the unemployment line and the people in it (Sgt Steroid & partner, Schuman, the rest of the police and municipal government that shares their attitudes)

does that count?
