I just acquired an AT94 MP5-clone carbine in 9mm with 16" barrel. I've put a basic mid-price (Vortex SPARC) red-dot on it and was wondering what people think is the best range for setting zero. Handgun rounds in a long-gun configuration just doesn't seem to be a well documented aspect of shooting (perhaps there is a message in all that). Nonetheless, this is something I've really wanted for many years and am happy to add it to my small collection.
Seems to me that treating it like a rifle is wrong (i.e. zero'ing it a 200-300 yards). So is it standard practice to zero one of these at 100 yards (still seems pretty long)? Or 50 (seems about right)?
I'd be interested in your thoughts.
Thanks,
B

I zero my Uzi at 100. The 25 and 50 yard hold under isn't too bad with 9mmP.

By 200 yards 9mmP is dropping like a stone. Zeroing at 200 or further out is just crazy talk.

Ruger PC9 zeroed to 50 yards. Still busts clays at 100.

Many thanks all. You've reinforced my intuition that, given the ballistic behavior of the cartridge, 50 yards seems about right. I should have added that, complicating things a bit (at least in my mind) is that the site center to the barrel center is a whopping 3.4 inches (+/-) so there are a lot of tradeoffs to be had. I probably could have used a non-H&K-style mount, but it seemed to be the right thing to put on the gun.
