On my way back to Victoria from a 7 day hitch in Galveston I stopped in at Carroll's Gun Shop in Wharton, Tx off US. 59.

What I found was one of the finest establishments I have ever stepped foot in. The staff was very helpful and professional, in fact I have never encountered a more knowledgable group of people in one place at one time. I am not nearly articulate enough to describe how refreshing an experiance it was compared to some of the shops in the area.

I am in the market for an AR-15, but I have very little experience or knowledge about the operation of this firearm. When I inquired about this the attendent responded with a wealth of knowledge, from the operation of the safety to the forward assist. I thought for sure he had taken AR-15 101 in college or something.

There were no negative statments made about how one firearm, round or load was worthless but how another may be more suited for the purpose.

I made it known from the begining that I was not there to buy a firearm (as I always do when ''window shopping'') but was there to look at prices and ask about trade in values they could give. Without going into numbers I will say I was impressed. The prices, new and used, were very reasonable. The shop was very well organized, well stocked, and had a rustic decor I could only hope to decorate my home in some day.

I would like to add that this is an unusually long post for me as I do not type well and have a dislocated shoulder.

As a disclamer, I am in no way afiliated with Carroll's Gun Shop, nor do I own stock or have anything to gain from this post. I just thought it would be a welcome change from the ''gun shop'' posts we usualy see here on THR

It's always nice to run across a shop like that. I drive well out of my way to get to Bob's down in Norfolk because they treat people well and know what they're talking about. Congrats on your new find!

Its always refreshing to hear about a shop that has competent workers behind the counter. Its rough sometimes getting that at the Bass Pro by my house in OK.
As for other spots in Texas, there is also a very good gun shop in Killeen, Tx that has very knowledgeable folks and friendly too. It is called GunsGalore. The prices are a little high, but the staff are great. They have no problems letting you handle any firearm in the store, in fact they will encourage you to. If you guys are ever in the Fort Hood area, stop on by. Its on south Fort Hood RD (or 195 south).

I agree ...

Nice post. I agree that it is a welcomed change to read a positive post about a gun store and the people who work there. Currently, there's a post running about how dumb they are and how smart we are.

I stop in gun stores across a half a dozen states on a regular basis and my experience has been much like your's. I guess it depends on the attitude you bring in the door with you.

Of course, I don't stop much at the big box stores looking for guns and ammo, but look for the out of the way sole proprietor type places. That's where you run into the unique gun deals and cagey locals. It's always been a lot of fun and pleasant experiences such as yours.

Like the Amish gunsmith in southern Ohio, who powered his lathe and milling machines off a water wheel several hundred yards from his shop. (It was kinda' dark in there with no electric lights.) Then there was the "General Store " in Kansas that had every type rifle or pistol you could think of and none were current manufacture. They were hanging on nails from the exposed rafters because they ran out of shelf space. And, somewhere in Northeastern Missouri is a gun store located on a back country road, in a barn full of guns. The sign said, "GUNs - 5 miles." Fifty miles later, I found it. Had to wait on the owner who was out plowing fields. I've looked for that place a half a dozen times driving through there and have never found it again. It must have been a mirage, or maybe I was dreaming.

Thanks again for your positive post,

Kerf

It's really refreshing to hear this. I am glad that there are these places that are professional and give the business of this sport a good name.

i used to pass that place going from huntsville to aransas pass and always wondered about it, guess i should have stopped in. sounds like a great place to spend my hard earned money.

He is totally right, a fab place to gunshop. Another good one is tomball pawn and jewelry up in tomball; even though it is a pawn shop, they have a large selection of new and used inventory. If you do not see it out front, they have a ton more in the back, just ask them what you want to see....
