I did a little bit of online research on the Carry ammo that I use ...in my different carry revolvers.
Most info came from Lucky Gunner ..
I used the ammo that was tested with the shorter barrels ... you will see 40 S&W & 45ACP listed
I have snub nose revolvers in those calibers
Again this is my carry ammo , tested in Gel

32 H&R 80gr Hornady FTX
Vel. 952 fps
Pent. 14.1
Dia. .40

327 Fed 100gr Gold dot
Vel. 1283 fps
Pent. 17.5
Dia . 51

38spl 130gr HST
Vel 824
Pent 13
Dia .73

357mag 125gr Hornady FTX
Vel. 1208
Pent 15.3
Dia ,52

40 S&W 180gr HST
Vel 964
Pent. 18.3
Dia. .72

44spl 200gr Gold Dot
Vel 875
Pent 14
Dia. .87

45 ACP 230gr Golden Saber
Vel 724
Pent 13.8
Dia.. .82

Things that surprise me
#1 32 H&R ... very low recoiling .. seems effective
# 2 327 Fed .. wow ... recoils similar to 38spl +P
#3 38spl HST says plus p ..but don’t feel like it
#4 357 .. zoom out of a 2 inch barrel
#5 40 S&W solid performance out of a 2.5 inch barrel
#6 44 Spl Gold Dot ... performed perfectly and effectively
#5 45ACP works well from shorter barrel , standard pressure

All above would work ... well
I carry the Charter 40 S&W alot

Also note how the 327 Fed compares to the 357mag
Without alot less recoil..

Have you looked at ARX ammo? I carry 77 grain / .38 Spcl in my snubbed. Gives increased velocity and minimal recoil.

I did look at it... but I stuck with the 130gr HST for my 856UL , I use Hornady 110gr Standard for my 642

What I found attractive about it from the videos I reviewed was its ability to consistently develop a comparable wound channel to that of a heavier weighted JHP that has expanded. It does this by increased velocity and the hydraulic effect caused by the flutes in the projectile. Also it seems to be barrier blind in as it is not affected by various clothing with regard to its penetration.

Take a look at the luckygunner.com labs results. A S&W 642 is one of my carry guns, I like to use HST rounds but since the 642's barrel is only 1 7/8" long, the .38 HST does not have reliable expansion, so I carry the Hornady 110 gr. Critical Defense(+p or non +p), which seems to be more reliable and available(or atleast it was).
