Hello all,

Is printing the same as open carry or brandishing? I've heard that printing may be grounds for arrest or revocation of your CCW permit.

I know, i know.....its my responsibility to make sure concealed is concealed, so please no lectures. Just asking if anyone has any experience with this happening.

thanks

State laws vary considerably. Without knowing what state you live in, it's impossible to advise you. In some states, open carry is permissible so it makes no legal difference whether one "prints" or not.

It's almost impossible to "print" enough to attract attention. If you carry OWB under a tight knit shirt, someone might notice. Any reasonable cover garment - jacket, untucked shirt - will be fine.

People are way too wrapped up in their own lives to pay attention to you. They aren't looking for guns. It never occurs to them that other people carry guns and that they ought to try to spot them.

I saw a guy in the Florida Mall last year who was wearing a bright, striped polo shirt with a new tan photographer's vest. From the buldge, I'd say he was packing a 1911. Looked like he was waiting for the next IDPA stage to start. As obvious as he was, no one paid any attention at all.

It depends on where you live!

I regularly go from OC to CC and back again throughout the day. Utah has no laws regarding printing, or even brandishing (only threatening).

One more reason why people should tell us where they live.

Texas, for example, has "intentional failure to conceal." The operative word there is "intentional."

Sorry guys, im in NJ. I dont/cant get a ccw here because of course im not of Merovingion lineage. I do have a Virginia and Fl CCW permits and I plan on traveling CC to NC in the next few weeks.

I am one of the overly cautious types and just want to make sure I cover my bases.

thanks for your suggestions.

IMHO Printing is a highly overstated concern. Moreover, who knows what is under your shirt? Is it a cell phone or an IPOD. I think there are many more incidents when your pistol may be exposed because you are moving in a way that uncovers it due to a lack of self awareness. Believe me, if you keep your pistol under wraps, no one is going to be looking twice at you.

Read this.

Might want to think again... my SO said she never noticed my shirt ride up - it may well have been just printing that got the cops called.

Hope you enjoy your visit.Open Carry is legal in NC although not practiced as much as states like NM,ID or MT.
So you should have no problems.
With the proper rig(belt and holster)you'll never "print" and virtually no one is thinking about people carrying.
It's mainly mental.Since you're from NJ ,I understand your anxiety.
Just relax,you'll be among friends.

Wow PTk, sorry for your ordeal. Thats exactly the kind of thing i was talking about. Glad everything worked out in the end, although the hassle/embarrassment was uncalled for.

And thanks for the links Duke... I used to live in Greensboro about 12 years ago. Have to travel close to there to pick up a dog. Im sure i'll enjoy revisiting.

thanks all.

PTK - Your weapon didn't print (from what I read) but was seen. Multiple weapons "printing" may get more than a few people excited. There is a difference.

I am under the impression that brandishing has to do with pointing or displaying a weapon in a threatening manner. I don't put printing and brandishing in the same category.

Open Carry is visible carry. Printing is not open carry IMO.

I'm in a gun-unfriendly state. Nice thing about that is no one here (unless you're actually in the process of holding up a bank) expects you to be armed.

I've had people brush up and catch the butt of the gun underneath the jacket. If it was some guy passing me in a restaurant, he never even looks back. If it's someone I know (at a party), they may give me an odd look, and I say, "D-mn Blackberries!" or similar, and I get the agreeing nod, and that's it.

I take great pains NOT to print here. It seems that standard belief here is that either a) the presence of a gun either declares that you are a homicidal maniac about to start a rampage or turns you into same, or b) a gun is the same as a bomb--it could go off AT ANY MOMENT! (After all, the ONLY PURPOSE of a gun is TO KILL, etc., etc., heard it all a million times...)

If I print or flash here, and it gets noticed, I would expected a crossed-kneed, syllibant cry of, "Oh my G-d [especially if he's an atheist] HE'S GOT A GUN!" Now you've got a choice to run or stay.

People who have done nothing wrong should stay. I would NOT try to attempt to influence the behavior of others at this point ("Hey, don't call the police, pal."), as an armed man attempting to force others to do his bidding is an easy brandishing charge.

I would expect that after the police get there, I MIGHT be looking at a disturbing the peace citation. No big deal--I'd probably NOT get convicted--except that the CLEO (issuing authority) can use this citation--even if I'm "exonerated"--to reject my next CCW renewal (if he doesn't just revoke it immediately).

Fun times. Now you understand why I take great pains not to print, and not to flash. Ounce of prevention.

IANAL, and I do not have on-point case law (nor do I wish to become it).
