Hi all,

Been a lurker for a while and had a question so decided to actually become a contributor :)

First off, I'll say I'm in Iowa, about 5'11" and fairly thin. Right now, it's pretty hot outside, so jeans (or shorts) and a t-shirt is the norm.

My current carry gun is a 1911 in an IWB holster. I also have a Beretta PX4 (full size, 9mm) that I'll probably end up carrying at some point, but only have a OWB holster for it. I also have a Beretta 92, but really hesitate to carry that due to the size.

My question is what do you feel is the best carry gun for me right now and what is the best manner of carry? Or am I better off trying to find a more compact carry gun?

Thanks!

I have been carring a g27 owb for several years as I never bought into the iwb and thought it would be too uncomfortable. It has always been tricky carring it in the summer with shorts and t shirt. Sometimes I had to carry my p3at or 642 due to the size. I recently got a galco king tuck IWB holster and I really really like it, It is not noticeable as long as I have enough room in the waist band. Best of all it will fit the g26,27,33, and 36 as well as the compact glocks in 9mm,357.40

The Galco King Tuk is the holster that I use for my 1911, works very well for the most part, just that the 1911 is fairly heavy so I tend to hike my pants back around and up every once in a while. That could also be though because I don't have a "gun" belt, just use a normal leather belt.

The OWB holster that I have for the PX4 is quite comfortable, and is actually fairly low profile, but worry about that pretty obvious gun bulge on my side. How do people conceal using an OWB holster?

Super Tuck or Galco Summer Comfort and a little thought and I can carry a 1911 or G23 all summer in FL in shorts or jeans.

CrossBreed SuperTuck and a thin/flat autoloader hanging off of a BeltMan belt.

Hard to beat, I liked my first ST so much that I've ordered two more since, all told I've got one for a Walther PPS, a 1911a1 and a Springfield XD45c ... and I'll keep ordering them for new carry guns as long CB is willing to make them for me.

If you dig the 1911, there are lightweight and/or compact models on the market.
But there is no end to the compact carry pistols on the market, and not knowing the features you do and don't like makes suggestions difficult. Get a big pile of guns, shoot them all, and report back on what features you do and don't like.

I am a pretty big fan of the 1911 style, not opposed to getting a compact version, but I'd like to get a good variety of different style too.

I'm not a big fan of Glocks, good guns, but just don't feel right to me. Kind of shy away from XD models for the same reason.

I've been looking at a couple of different models.... Personally, the smallest caliber I tend to look at is 9mm.

Taurus P845 (or 809)
Ruger P95
Walther P99
S&W M&P (though I don't like not having an external hammer)
CZ75
HK USP
Sig P229

....wow... if I'm going to get all those, I'm going to need a decent chunk of change.....

My suggestion would be the H&K first and the Sig second. Had a Ruger p95 and couldn't stand the trigger. My favorite carry gun is a 1911 Commander slide on an Officer's frame. After doing some shopping last week, if I get rid of my G19 I'm getting the H&K USP to replace it.

"My question is what do you feel is the best carry gun for me right now"

Of the 3 guns you mentioned..........well 2 guns and a boat anchor (Beretta 92):D, your 1911 is the best choice for concealment, but you must also remember with concealed carry the holster and shirt you choose is as important as the gun itself. If you feel uncomfortable with your 1911 try something like the Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 special or perhaps the Kahr line in .40 or .45 ACP.;)

LD45

P.S. I have a Ruger P-95 and it is a huge gun to try and conceal.

So I broke down and picked up a CZ75 P-07 Duty in .40 cal today, went to look and couldn't resist :D

Now I just have to check with CB and see if I can get a IWB carry holster for it. Still plan on carrying the 1911 though fairly frequently, especially once I'm able to get a good quality belt. Sounds as though the Belt Man is a good spot to get them.
