Case Bulges From An Unsupported Chamber...In 45 ACP??

I've used the COVID at-home time to sort through the buckets and barrels of range brass I've accumulated over the last couple of years. These cases are from that batch.

The challenge will be to find every one of these blown out cases before they get mixed in with the rest of my supply. Tedious for sure. But MUCH better than getting one or more of these damaged cases into my loading process and having a blowout in one of my guns!

Hey maybe they were shot from a reising lol. The I think there some what supported how the bolt goes in to the recess, cant remember looking at the brass the few times I've shot them.

Also, I had never heard of 45 Super before.

Thanks for teaching me today!

Springfield V-16 Longslide 45 Super - the V-16 refers to the sixteen ports along the top of the slide to help tame the beast. This one has a 24# recoil spring and a silicone damper.

Factory ammo is non-existent. Load data is out there but is slim. Starline sells new .45 Super Cases. I loaded up 500 rounds with 11.5gr 800x under 185gr HAP. Muzzle velocity should be around 1300fps according to the data. I have not seen any case bulging or other problems in the brass fired from this one. At the same time I make double sure to keep this ammo separated from my standard .45acp ammo.

I've seen quite a few bulged cases from Glock's early unsupported barrels in 40 S&W/10mm.

But these pieces of range brass are the first bulged cases that I've seen in 45 ACP. 45 ACP, of course, is supposed to be a lower pressure round. I would guess that these rounds were at or above the SAMMI spec, in addition to being fired in a relatively unsupported barrel.

What do they look like to you? Any guess as to the gun that fired them?

I'm guessing a Glock 21/30/41 because I've seen that exact thing out of mine when shooting Doubletap 255 grain hard cast LSWC +P, which I won't shot again out of the Glocks. In an RIA 1911 I didn't see the bulge. I'm guessing the ones in your pic were loaded HOT and/or heavy bullets with the bullets jammed into the lands.

Here's my DT brass fired out of a Gen 4 G30

Here's a thread with info on this load and pistol specifically, including DT's response to my query and their recommendation against shooting this ammo in any barrel with polygonal rifling.

While I agree with their recommendation and will follow it, I DON'T agree with their (or THR's armchair quarterbacks') assertion that the bulge resulted ONLY because of lead buildup in the Glock barrel. The very first case I shot through the pistol had the exact same bulge, and all the cases looked identical.

Thanks for the info. Always good to know where I can find this in a pinch.

I've got ~500 rounds loaded and that will last me a while. It's a brutal round to fire. I don't see me shooting more than 50 on any given range day.

I should probably install some Hogue molded grips to help with that but I hate the way the look on a .45 :)

In a 1911 pistol a sized case and a straight edge is all that is necessary to check head space By design a small section of the case is exposed at the extractor groove. Thousands of rounds in A gold cup and Ive never seen that.

I did see a fellow club member get careless with his loading chores. Last round in the magazine blew out at that extractor groove and blew straight down the magazine bouncing it off the bench in several pieces. Fortunately for him and the fellows on either side it was the last round.

The cases from your gun and those I found have exactly the same appearance. I think that we have a winner!

I examined 26 lbs of brass this morning (just over 2k cases) and found only five more cases with markings like this. Worth it for my peace of mind, but mind-numbing nonetheless.

Thanks for all your comments and help!

my g30 with the stock barrel will do that to a 45acp case when i get close to 45 super pressures. on the other hand, my alpha wolf barrel (full chamber support) in the g30 handles 45 super pressures just fine, even with 45acp brass. note: all my 45 super loads use starline 45 super cases. my bulged cases happened during my 45 super testing (a man's got to know his limitations).

note: the g30 has a 21 lb. wolf recoil spring.

i'll also wager that the g29, with hot ammo, will eject cases that look like that.

No prob. BTW I recycled those cases and suggest you do the same.
