Last week a friend and I were out at the range shooting our handguns. He was using his Sig P229 .40S&W with Georgia Arms 165gr FMJ (nickel case) reloads( these, I believe). I noticed while shooting that all of his fired cases had a bulge near the case head, just slight enough to easily see when looked at close. The rounds all fired mostly normally, with one or two failure to return fully to battery malfs, which we thought might be attributed to the ProMag spare he was using. The primers on the fired cases showed no unusual pressure signs like overflowing, but just about every case was bulged.

My questions are, does the P229 have a partially unsupported chamber, and is that likely the cause of the bulge? Should he maybe call Georgia arms and ask them to refund or exchange his ammo (he bought 500 rounds, probably shot ~100 during the day)?

Other ideas?

Here are some photos showing supported and unsupported.

I don't own a SIG P229, but somebody who does will be along before long.

It is called Glocked brass, the bulge that you see, but as you can see it is not limited to just Glocks. Any gun with unsupported chambers will give the same bulge. Glock just won the prize for having the most of it.

You can bet that if Georgia Arms loads it, it is a safe load. They would not stay in business as long as they have selling faulty products. Of course anybody can slip up every so often.

A buddy of mine has a P229 chambered in 9mm. I've noticed that his brass too would have some minor bulging near the case head. I've re-sized, reloaded, tested them with an OAL gauge, and fired them without problems.
