Case recommendations for airline travel

I am flying United Airlines next week and want to carry my Ruger 5" GP100, an XD subcompact, and perhaps my Airweight. Looking for a good solid case to meet TSA rules and also not weigh a ton. Pelican cases have been recommended to me - any thoughts on model and other makes?

Well, I remember that they wanted a case that had no identifying marks that it was a weapon. Other than that, a cheap plastic foam lined case with holes for padlocks did the job. Those are inspected, locked by TSA, then loaded on the plane. When you pick 'em up, it will be from a security office and not that carousel. I also seem to remember that the case had to be a certain size. I bring this up because you mention a handgun. If you put it in a small case, you may want to put that in a bigger cheaper case. You also should call your airline in advance because they have a say in this too, and some just don't do it. They can also tell you more too.

There is no TSA approved case. The rules state it must be a case that prevents access by anyone but YOU, so no TSA locks are to be used to lock the case.

You can't do better than Pelican. They aren't cheap.

I used the lockable case that my Witness Match came in last time I flew. TSA never asked to inspect it. It stayed in my checked luggage and I picked it up from the regular baggage claim area. Since you're flying with several, a Pelican or Storm case would be good.

+1000 on Pelican cases. I have 2 1 rifle and 1 pistol and in opinion there's no better for the money. I used to work for GE aircraft engines and we bought cases from one of Pelicans sister companies Hardigg for shipping engine parts and they will take amazing amounts of punishment. Both cases cost in the $200 range but they are airtight,have pressure relief valves and the rifle case has wheels as well. Go to their website and I think you'll be impressed.

Pelican/Storm/Hardigg. They're the best there is, and if you use a quality lock, they're almost impossible to break into without a lot of time and effort. That doesn't mean they can't be taken and jacked, but in the short term, they're pretty tough. I know a guy who had his sniper rifle in a Pelican and was coming back from a training course. He got his case back and it was bent up to hell as if someone was trying to pry it open to get the gun. They never were able to get it open enough to get the rifle out. Says a lot for Pelican.
